jddog 09-22-2005, 11:18 AM A question, you built "all" your next 3 buildings or you built only roofs ?
They will be interely build like other buildings, becasue i don't know now ho the final camera will be. If necesary I can displace a building to anothe rside or add another building here or there to close my scene... And so after I have some more models for me too for other scene ;)
::Gunilla
Ty so much, yep new updates will come out more slowly now until all work become more longer and complex to create this scene and details...

Waiting to see your next step:)
Hi Daulte. You´ve created a nightshot scene perfectly. I´ve observed the image for minutes. The mirrored building are very realistic and the street lighting too..ahm the lights inside the towers casting shadows on the ground looks great!

Ok, I take a little break from the architectural modelling and textureing and try to do some test on the flame/smoke of the explosion. For now I don't think about debris, glass break, metallic structure in the impacta and explision. I will just made some test on the pyrocluster materials (all volumentric) and the particle control.
Here the wire (on the simplified city model, most easy to work with) of the particles and volume of the pyrocluster material.
Next images the render result.

Wow, those are some beautiful explosions :). (I've been followin the thread from the concept and think the buildings are incredible, too!)
Advice?... I'm sure you're quite aware that in the end we'll want to still be able to see your wonderfully detalied car through the smoke, so no sense begging you to do something that is already on your priority list for sure :P.
Just a question, I guess... what is causing the explosion in this scene?
(keep on truckin, this is great fun to watch! :) )

looking great jdd- it's a bit hard to tell at the moment which is best without seeing the effect the flames have on the reflections of the buildings- the black smoke stands out a bit, but for sure will be blended in better when the other buildings are visible.
the flame and explosion looks very convincing-must get pyrocluster! I like number 3 and 4 the best so far.

09-30-2005, 11:17 AM
Holy c**p , all these 4 are amazing, I understand the difficult choice you have :eek:
I would say 2 or 4 though flames on 4 could mask the car a little bit too much to me but I guess that is tweakable.
Outsatnding job here Julien :applause:

Hey, very cool. I've done some simple explosion tests for my entry but hey don't look nearly that good. What technique are you using?
I personally like number 4 because there is less smoke. I don't know if i'm right on this but it would seem to me that there would be less/no smoke at the front of the explosion due ot the force of the blast.
Check out this link for a wicked, pretty hi-res expolsion which, if nothing else, proves you're definately on the right lines...

I don't know if i'm right on this but it would seem to me that there would be less/no smoke at the front of the explosion due ot the force of the blast.
You are right David... I've also to work more on this efx. Like I wrote that are only tests to view what directions and settings (especially particle duration time/live) are better. Now I think that the explosion go to far away for example and for the smoke you have right... I will continue to test... :wip:
Tecnique... not so particular. I started to set a particle duration time, a illumination time and then I work with all pyrocluster setting to analyze wich one change or modify in a good direction the fire efx... Is really a step by step method. Very time consuming... but work fine. The most importat thing I noticed is to be fixed with particle live time. To obtain this kind of fx you are obliged to anim the scene so this allow you to show the correct evolution of the pyro material from the born to the end of the particle life. When you are fixed with this you can test all differet PC settings...
btw many many thanks for the great link... :bounce: I was searching something like that. Ty so much !!!

very very nice explosion test Julien and the textures on the buildings (previous updates) look cool...:thumbsup: just one thing that has been kind of bugging me is the camera angle you use... In concept, it seemed perfect but now with the textures and all, it seems like some parts of the image seem too flat and close together... maybe a depth of field could fix it right away or it might just be me..
jddog
09-30-2005, 12:11 PM
just one thing that has been kind of bugging me is the camera angle you use...
oh yeah... this camera allows me to view all what I modelled, but in all case this will not be the final camera, totally agree with what you tell here... Just in this case I have a view on all elements... a very wip camera... When I will be fixed with environment & explosion I will search the better camera angle/position...

Great fire and smoke effect on the last update. I wisg I could do the same quality effects. But, as I understood,you want to catch the moment when car is breaking through the building wall,right? So, in this case, there can't be this kind of smoke effect. This kind of smoke will apear fewseconds later. Don't you think so?

Difficult choice... I really like the mid one or the one from yesterday - there's something about the very straight, correct view that make the scene even more dramatic. The car jumping out from a window is not what you expect to see in a shot like that if you get what I mean ... hmm, sometimes my english isn't enough.
It's turning out really well whatever choice you make I'd say :thumbsup:

I like the distorted reflection in the windows, but to be pedantic I think the distortion would not be continuous between individual panes. Each pane would have its own distortion and slightly different angle. Does that make sense?
(to be even more pedantic, I think double glazed window tend to bow inwards in the middle due to the vacuum between the panes)

the explosion looks fantastic jdd! very vivid. Possibly it needs a bunch of very tiny glass fragments as well? one thing,- are you planning on having cars/people on the street below? it would add to the drama I think. wonderful work.

This composition is fantastic! You really have a sense of vertigo. The explosion reads really well too. Have you thought of elongating and bluring the debris and explosion cloud? This might re-enforce the trajectory of the car.
This is a great concept for an illustration -- a car smashing through a highrise office window!

Mmm, the shards/chunks of glass are just perfect! I've been watching this one from the start, and I am absolutely loving the fact that you're back in full swing and rocking once again :). The reflections in the buildings simply make me smile... the slight irregularities in the glass that give it the non-uniform reflection certainly add to the realism. Looking forward to seeing the damage on the car. Keep it up!

Yes you are right. The render before I didn't have reflection. Making reflection active I noticed that the fire 'shader' become too flat, extremely red with a gradient that go to a pink colour. I have to work on this... Thanks to point me on this!
:: basilisk
What you wrote here yes it make sense. Working lone for long time on a image sometime make me ankylose my self sometimes and you have point me on an important detail. Reflection cover more that 50% of images and tecnically and physically you have right.
This is a must to do for the next (or very next) up-date. Thanks so much for this detailed comment... About the vaccom of planes this part probably will be very hard to do... but I will took this in consideration
:: shakes
Yep the bunch of tiny glass pieces is to do, but probably this will be do on the post fx session. Fire shader mask a lot of glass pieces (if you see the broken glass render only psted some image before).
About people and cars on street... yes this is planned... probably I will work with extremely low poly/very boxy models until the camera is very far away from the street. Just for adding volumes with correct shapes... the scene like this is quiet empty and like you underline without a drama sensation...
:: harryb
Blurring and othe rminor fx are planned but only in post fx sessions. Every kind of object have is own alpha (buffer object) so I can separate and treat each fx separately...
:: imbusion
yep reflection will one of the next to do things like I answer at basilisk. Thanks so much for your critique and point me on this !

Fat taf ! yep is a must to do thing... putain ça va faire beacoup de taf ça... (a lot of work...)

yes and no about reflection on other building... well first I've to rework all reflections deformation, then I notice that the image is subdivided by a warm color (left) and a cold corlor (right)... depending on how image will evolve that can be a interesting things to use to balance more the image and make it more readable... anyway I will see what will happen after reflection modification

awesome jdd!! terrific explosion. are you going to have some reflection of it on the opposite building? I think it would look great..

The image already has a strong immediate impact - which is just perfect. You could correct some of the red in the explosion and make it more yellow instead (I had the exact same problem :D )

Motion blor and other dynamic fx will be done in the post fx session

Thanks you ! Like I told ad Madshooter, fx will be present :wip:
:: SNOWS
yep reflection to the other side will be a problem... like pointed before in comments from other use I have to take care that the main action on the image will be not cancelled by too much other fx in the image. In reality with this pov you don't see any reflection to the other side... so at this time I will take care at your comment, but not sure if at end the reflection will be present.
In this monent the image have an axis of colors very geometric and I try to equilibrate this colors betweed warms (explosion) and cold (blues and dark colors)... :wip:

well crazy wabbit... what a challenge use PyroCluster... I have to be agree with you. I will try to change and modify it (I must to do) but before I have to do a render into he final size and analise how PyroCluster material com out at final scale, the I will fine tuning flame shapes, colors gradient and mior other Pyro settings to come ut with something belieavable...
At this time i render a image at 4000x2800 px to view better all small details... what is preview in next updates are:
_ better and more complex texture in the street to avoid a so uniform material on the ground
_ working the Ambient Occlusion on buildings for the final render size
_ working on the fire flames
_ changing colors of cars and car position to bring the focus on the main action area without charge too much the 'background' and point the view to the action finding a better balance in the image...
_ check evey procedural texture at final render size if they are ok
_ ... starting to prepare all post fx like blur, motion blur, eventually some dof too...
:wip:
much apreciated all your enthusiasm on my work on this contest :blush: evey comment are usefull and is very interesting to read all your point of view and encoragements that's help me... wow I havn't so much time, but a lot of small details to work with... I've really to hurry up !

Let me humbly advise you to not care too much about the exact colouring in the raw PC settings. Just render it out and fix the rest with the "selective colour" adjustment tool in Photoshop instead. Saves a whole lot of time and headaches :thumbsup:

Fantastic progess, everything looks great. I love the effects, especially the lighting effects in the explosions and the reflections in the glass. The only suggestion I would make is to move the car further away from the building (but that is probably a ton of work). I think it would be even more spectacular if the car was in mid air, high above the street. However, it looks amazing as it is. Nice work on the challange. Alexi.

Thanks so much for your support, comments and enthusiasm that you give me...
At this moment I render it for the final size... but I have found some problem due to the massive reflections on my scene. After the first render test of 46 hrs I saw that only a 1/3 of the image was rendered so I've separate my image in 4 different parts.
The first part (all right buildings) was rendered in 9 hrs, the 2 part (the left part) with only the glass building require 20 hrs of render and now I render all the explosion part. I started to render first the broken glasses then I will render the car and the fire fx and I will compose all the scene. I hope that I can do that in 20 hrs...
so please be patient...

Yep that true and a real suprise for me :shrug: I don't know what really happened but I suppose that come from the reflections.
My render engine had to calculate different part of the image to render the reflections (and on the glass building the reflections goes in differents directions) and I suppose that bigger is the image and exponentially the time grow up becasue of the hi definition and the different area calculation to compose correctly the reflection...
At beginn I dind't really pay attention at this problem becase a small render als 800x550x require only 35/40 minute wth global illumination, AO etc...

Um, the horrors of the final rendering is ON!
I guess you've already finished the pass containing the reflections, but if not, a good starting point is to set the reflection depth in render options as low as possible - sometimes even as low as 2 can work, but then there are other cases where you need 3 or 4 in order to avoid weirdness.... Then ray depth as low as possible of course, yet again depending on the amount of transparent materials.... And usually one can get away with a slightly decreased accuracy by increasing the threshold (in render options) a little bit... going from 0% to 2% will often speed up things a lot without any visible loss of quality.
Anyways, good luck with the rest of the passes :thumbsup:

oh! that's interesting... well yep reflection depth is set to 4 due to some number of reflections in windows by windows... but the threshold sound interesting... I will test it on the small glasses parts render, because Pyrocluster, reflections, trasparency and fine, small polygons just aren't really friends... :hmm:

Gah... no, they are certainly not friends. Be careful with the threshold thing though - some rendering purists claim it should never go above 0%... while my personal take on the matter is that if there's no visible difference, there is no problem either.

The explosion is WHOUAHH!!
But I just noticed... there's something odd with the reflections in the windows - the cars on the street are reflected very high up in the building. Can't remember seeing it in any of the previous renders ... but perhaps that's how it should be?
