Such a wide subject. My brain is bubbling with images. I'll give it a day or two to settle down before I choose in which direction to go.

good luck to you all
Mathias

Hello
I have for a day or so, thought about what I should do. I decided early that I should stay away from a fantasy/scifi type image. Try something different from what I normaly draw.

One of the most spectacular things I now is the northen lights.
I remember new years eve 2000. I was astaying at my parents place in the north of sweden. Some time after midnight I looked out the window to my room and saw that the sjy had turned green.
The light was so strong that it even cast shadows of the trees on the ground! In on word:
Spectacular.

...and also, it gave me this idea.

Here are some sketches I did in my sketchbook during long hours of waiting for renders at work. I also did a first pass at finding some good colors.

hopy you enjoy and please say what you think.

see you later.

winterforest. just trying to draw what I see in my head.

another one. trying a different angle. The place I grew up in, have plenty of old barns left deserted in the forrest.
Roof caved in.
Empty.
Forgotten.

just a quick bash of a sketch and some color.

I think the aurora will be either green or blue.
althought red is nice...

trying to separate layers and making sure the layout is working.

Hi Matlars! I'd love to see the Northern Lights... I'd love to sit with my family, all wrapped up and warm, and watch it.

But i'm sure it's gonna be a tricky subject to pull off and show just how spectacular it is.

The little house and the trees and the wide perspective will give some sense of scale... any plans for characters in the piece?

I've been starting to flesh out the colors and details for the background.
I'm trying to get as much depth in there as possible.
I'm using bits and pieces of photographs to try and build up a base for painting.

Hopfully I'll try to make it look like I'm using a wide angle lense.

Hi Duddlebug

Yes, it's going to be tricky to try and sell the scale and coolness of it.
But I need a challenge :)

I've been thinking about adding a character or not.
It might be an animal or a person looking at the sky. I dont know yet.
I think I need to do some more sketches for this piece.

What I was mostly interested in doing for this one, was to work with color and get a nice palette. I'm not really happy with what i have yet.

thanks for your comments

/Mathias
