I am laptop shopping right now and have basically ruled out the big clunkers(Boxx, Alienware, ect) and am looking for some experiences with the more nimble bunch.

I am leaning towards the Sager 3880. It seems to be similarly configured to the Dell m70 but WAY less. I am willing to sacrifice the quatro card for the price difference.

The other way to go is with an Acer Ferrari W/ Turion.

But my biggest question is about the power of the Turion from AMD. does it match up to the pentium M ?....is it a much different from the Mobile 64's ?...and is there a release on the Dual core Turions ??....

Alot of questions I know, but if anyone could share their experiences or wisdom, this way or that, It would be great.
Cheers
Jeremy

i would get a pentium M (insert goofy brand). nothing beats it on battery power and heat dissapation. you may regret not getting a pentium M.

Really...I have heard that the Turion is stronger...actually I've heard it both ways... :banghead: ..

anyone out there have any benchmark link I could check out....

and what of the dual core Turion I can't seem to find any info on it anywhere...just that it's soon to be released, but no one knows when..

cheers

Unfortunately Snappy tends to be a bit over zealous.

Fact of the matter is that CPU to CPU, Turion is lower power usage, lower wattage than the Pentium M. On a complete system the components used factor into power consumption. Bottom line, there is very little difference between the PM and the Turions. Battery life isn;t all that wildly different between the two.

as for speed, it goes back and forth depending on how the system is being benchmarked.

So contrary to what has been said here, Turion is a solid competitor to the PM, the major difference being that Turion is 64 bit, PM is not.

AMD has already displayed dual core Turions at IDF, and they will hit the streets long before any dual core Intel mobile CPU.

My only problem with the turion is the ATI chipset. I flat out do not like ATI.

That is the one draw back to the mobile AMD chips. You are absolutly STUCK with crappy video (ATI) and bad chipsets. Though, it is possible to get some Nvidia video, there's not as much variety. Partly because Nvidia seems to suffer from a weaker mobile presence than ATI atm...

And here, all I want is to see the low power Geforce 7 series to find its way to the laptop, and in conjunction with the Turion, that would be great. Of cource at the price point I would want (~$1000) thats not going to happen ;)

That is really my only draw back to the AMD as well (The mobile units anyways)....I can't really say that I 've had major problems with the ATI card's....But in my experiences, I've found my home station (Boxx Dual AMD 2800 mp's /Quatro 128 megs) run huge circles around my work (Dell dual Xeon w/ATI ( don't know the spec's but it's on of their top of the line)..

It's always been AMD for me all the way........But maybe I will have to go with intel on this one...

FYI....

it appears that there will shortly be a mobile nVidia chipset. nVidia has said they were working on an integrated graphics chipset, integrated into the chipset, not a separate graphics chip like you see on boards with on board graphics. It appears from their description that it has to be for mobile systems.

Thats interesting. Got any links to this info? I wonder if they're working an integrated version of the Geforce 7 series into the chipset? It would make the most sense since the 7 series seem to be the most power efficient that Nvidia has to offer. Obviously it wouldnt be as powerful as a desktop solution, but I can see it giving ATI a definate run for its money.

Plus Nvidia needs to strike at ATI on the mobile arena. They really lack presence there. ATI has no competition, and it gives us poor choices as consumers. Hopefully a chipset from nvidia will stir things up and give us good Turion based notebooks and lower prices :)

Well after taking it all into account (i think) I am probably going to end up with a dell 9300, maxed out ram and a Pent M 2.0, 256 Gforce.....The price is tough to beat with the specials being offered right now,and I've always got the option in the future to get a 1.7 Pentium M and Pin Mod it to 2.2 gigs. From what I've read around the notebook forums It would seem that this is a very stable and easy mod,,,,and at 2.4 the Pentium M should be right up there with a Pent4 3.6 for preformance...

thanks for the insight guys...wish I had the time to wait for the 64x...
