Ok, i may be buying a new computer soon, my first PC ever, i have been a mac user for as long as i have owned a computer, but, i want to learn Brazil and Houdini. I love my G5 but i need a new tool now. I am looking at an Opteron based Boxx, and i need a Quadro 3400 or higher because of my display. So here are my questions... Who here has or uses a Boxx? and how quiet are they? Another one is should i use XP-64 or standard XP? I will be primarly running LightWave, Modo, Maya and Pixar's Renderman(finally got in a renderman class at school!) Having never owned a PC, what software can you recomend me getting? i dont plan on using it on the internet or to play much games. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

necer heard of anyone switching from Mac to PC before, but i believe Boxx is the best out there, never tried it before but i'm going to buy one in 2-3 months i guess.
the thing for me is that its Video cards are super Expensive for me....is there anyway i can get a Geforce instead of a Quadro or Quadro FX?
and i have another question too...is Monitor included with the workstation?(i dont think so,just checking)
Anyway...it's cool:thumbsup:

Hey oddgit, get a BOXX if you have the money! I have been working my 7300 like a dog for almost 3 months now and it's never shuttered. I chose them because of thier reliability and performance but also because of the expandability of thier systems (you can upgrade to dual core opterons later)!

you're right... the quadros are worth every penny!

I didn't have the option for a monitor when i bought mine. Boxx is to concerned (and rightfully so) about the stuff inside the tower to complicate sales with 3rd party stuff.

How quiet are they? Well, it's like the reassuring KEEEERRRR-CHUUUUUNKK sound of a new car door!

I can get you any graphics card you want. Personally, I'm into the FX line of cards as opposed to the GeForce stuff. We don't sell monitors.

I have to get a Quadro 3xxx or higher because of the apple display, the Dual Link thing.
I ask about the sound level because i am pretty senesitive to sound, that is why i like my g5. I am not exactly switching to a PC i am just adding a PC to my tool box :D

You may want to get as many components as possible that work with Linux, in case you might want to use it in the future. Just a thought :)

i have considered linux, i am learning it at school, out computers are Linux workstations for the renderman class. It is something i will address when i order it.
I was also wondering if you have any of you all have any exp with WinXP 64 if is should have that or standard XP installed.

I'm running Windows X64 right now. So far all my hardware has worked, save for an old joystick, and a few really old games (from 1995 :P). This doesnt mean you wont run into problems. I made sure most of what I was using or going to use, worked in 64bit windows before hand.

From a stability standpoint, the system is perfect. The only real issue for most people seems to be lack of drivers from various companies. Cannon for example, or some of Wacom's lower end tablets, or my joystick.

hehhe you sound pretty bitter about the joystick thing :D
So maya runs well enough under XP 64 that there isnt mych problems?

I dont use Maya. I use XSI and Lightwave.

I'm only bitter about the joystick thing because it was a Microsoft Joystick :P. It was about time for a new one anyway.. that old game port is somewhat annoying, USB is definately nicer :).
