hi,

I was read in alias|wavefront site that the geforce256, geforce2 and geforce3 series do not recommended for use w/ maya. But, and the geforce 4 ?? (ti4200, 4400 and 4600)... also not recommended ??

the Quadro DCC or Quadro 4 are very expensive! ...

the 3dlabs or ati makes video cards with the same performance and price of geforce? But that they work better with Maya..

I think most people here are using a gforce card with maya, and nobody? has problems with it

but exist a warning in the alias site,

There are many cards based on GeForce256, GeForce2 and GeForce3 chipsets. nVidia and Alias|Wavefront do not recommend these cards for use with Maya 4.5 as you may experience various refresh, display and stability problems and inadequate performance. - http://www.aliaswavefront.com/en/Community/Support/qualified_hardware/QUAL/maya_45_NT.html

Hi MsLeal

I am using a PNY Verto GeForce 4 Ti4600 and Maya 4.5 is running like a charm :) . The nVidia Quadro 4 XGL series may be worth the the money but I couldn't afford one of the those. Actually the Quadro 4 XGL series is made for the professional market and the cards/drivers are officially certificated for Alias|Wavefront(TM) Maya, SOFTIMAGEŽ|XSI, Discreet 3ds max(TM), Newtek Lightwave 3D(TM) ...

ciao

ow, right!:)

a question,

the geforce 4 suport the Hardware Overlay ??? Is the Hardware Overlay that up the performance in Maya too...

i noticed minor display problems with my geforce3 in maya a xsi, so i did some investigating and found ways of making the geforce series recognized as quatro cards. Things run smoothly now ;) Its not that the geforece cards are not certified, its the drivers. The quatro drivers are certified. Its pretty easy to convert the cards (in software) but ive read that the geforce4 cards may not work properly with the quatro fix. I wont go into details about it but its been posted a few times here how to do it already.

Yes, GeForces from 256 to 3 have the exact same GPU's on the card, wheter it was an MX, Titan or Quadro. The amount of MHz's a particular GPU can handle, is what makes it either an MX, Titan or a Quadro.
Because of this one-size-for-everyone GPU's, Quadro's aren't anything but GeForces using some special features. So by some clever software which makes your machine think it has aten a Quadro card instead of that GeForce you still had a few restarts earlier (;)), you will now have a professional Quadro card, running a few MHz's slower than the "real" Quadros.

But with GF4, NVidia changed the cores. So now GF4 MX is a POS which has a feature set and speed of GF2 (Poor people who think they'll get a damn fast GeForce 4 for quite a low price...), GF4 Titan is it's own GPU, and Quadros have their own GPU too.
This makes it impossible to have any speed gains trough the hardware itself. Although I've heard that some people have a Quadro'ed GF4's, but I doubt it. Maybe the new Quadro drivers which can then be installed somehow increase the speed marginally, but there's no way you would get any more speed from the hardware itself.

So, just search for a topic named "viewport slowdown" or something, there was a good talk about turning GFs to Quadros.

even if it doesnt truely turn gf4 into a quatro, its still worth using the drivers to get rid of any wierd driver display problems. and so far ive been able to play games still too ! :)

hehe - i think there is speed enough with a gforce 4 i have 57 frames in the www.maya-testcenter.de

true.

My comp (it is only till i can get my new one) has a geforce 3 in it......it is great!!!! For texturing (which is what i do anyway). BUT, paint fx dont work very well........sculpt surfaces dont work at all....and it crashes the comp a lot......so the stability issue is very true!!!

Go with the lowest end Quadro 2, it doesnt play games too well, but it wont have any problems.

my next card is gonna be a quadro 2 900 (fun fun fun)

Or just simply buy a GeForce 2 or 3 and patch it to Quadro. Trust me, it's the exact same card you'd be buying, except the driver CD and smaller MHz's.

For more info about it, here's some keywords for Google to give you more info: Rivatuner and NVStrap

I'm using a Gf4MX440 and dual monitors with maya and max and all works fine. I would like a 4200 but I am waiting for the new NV30 cores to come out after xmas before I buy a new card again. For a while Quadros were not that different than the Ti series, but the 900 is a pretty beasty card. But I have yet to do enough work to warrent a $999+ card. :) Stats wise a ti4600 pumps out more than the 900 but that depends on your uses.

in fact , i think that 3d labs wildcat!!!6210 is the best card now, but that is too expensive for us , and gforce is okay too. maybe

Exactly, I'd sure like one (Or two ;)) of those Wildcats, along with a dual AMD Opteron 2GHz with a few gigs of RAM and five Seagate Cheetah SCSI harddrives in RAID... but the money is a slight issue to us students ;)

That's why GeForces are so perfect solution for 3D, you go buy a cheap old GeForce and modify it to Quadro and *bing*... you have a professional GFX card for damn low price
