I'm a student in high school and im trying to learn more about texturing. This piece is called "Darkening Sun". I tried to get the feel as if the sun is burning out or "darkening". Comments and crit. are most welcome. Thanks.

I guess the most obvious crit would be that the sun you've made isn't really round, it looks like it needs some smoothing.
The texture is on it is pretty neat looking, but I think it could use a bit of a corona. Even a dying sun would cast light off into space.

I agree, a corona is a good idea. Also perhaps a few bright spots showing through the rough bit facing the camera - think of a lava flow where hot lava is bursting through the crust of cooler lava on top.
Maybe have a look at photos of the sun and images at nasa.gov or somewhere like that for other ideas.
Nice job all in all, and certainly an interesting idea to practice texturing with.

My main problem with this piece is that the sun looks solid - but the real sun isn't. I think that even a fading star shouldn't look solid, more gaseous. Other than that the pic looks pretty cool :).

yea i agree with Woodrodius,
increase the testellation or poly count to smooth it out a bit.
try and put a bit a gradient coming from the inside and make the otuside a bit translucent, with maybe some sort of golw effect...
really good try,

Thanks a lot for your replies and crits. I understand what you mean about needing it to be more round so i fixed that, but being just a student and not having anymore training than a few dvd's from gnomon, i don't know how to create that lava flow through the sun. if it wouldn't take too long to write it i'd really appreciate a quick tutorial to help me complete the picture. Thanks a lot again.

Hi, i like the ideea, but the scene is too simple. And yes, i think that even if it's a dying sun, it still casting light, and it should be more bright than it is right now. At this moment it just looks like a rock in space. I like the texture on it, but you could try fixing the problems in the scene, i'm sure it would look much better, good luck!

As the others have taken care of all technical crits that leaves me with just one thing to point out: When stars run out of hydrogen to burn they begin to bloat and become glowing red, as they start to fuse helium atoms. When this 'red giant' phase is done they blow up, casting off a huge nova of gas (they're called super novea then) and leaving only the star's super hot core then called a dwarf star or neutron star. Then it cools down over time, turning into a brown dwarf star. If the star's heavy enough it turns into a black hole after blowing it's top as a super nova...
What I mean is basically, try making the texture more like glowing red hot boiling plasma if you are going for realism.

I would agree with the comments made above.
Did you SubD your sphere..? Because your Sun doesnt look round..! Its in cuts (like a diamond) if you know what i mean.
Also the middle bit of the Sun has nice and clear details of the surface, however as you go further to the outer side things start to get blurry! Dont think that looks nice.
I also realised no stars being shown in the lower right corner..at all..! Do you have your cast shadows setting ON..? turn it off..! : )
