SP2, I feel, is n where near as bad as many people make it out to be. So I say upgrade. However, do take care to back up your essential files first. No point in running in and hoping for the best. If you can do it, a clean install of XP and SP2 is recommended for least likely issues occuring. I, however, was able to instal it straight on without any issues, so, depends on your set up i suppose.

just make sure you have a long book to read. XP2 was only really painful if you were using legacy programs (like big buisness) especially if those programs happened to be made by arch rivals of m$ (thats an over dramatisation, but not that far from the truth)

as mentioned make a backup and upgrade, sp2 has worked flawlessly for me on a multitude of rigs with different applications installed, and most issues others have had problems with have been worked out so go for it.
We've had no problems updating our systems to SP2. This was quite a while ago when the service pack was first introduced. Thats over 200+ machines we've updated.
Granted, there was one batch of Dell machines (about 20 or so) that didnt take SP2 too well, but the problem was easily fixed (a simple permissions setting). The funny thing was, they were the newest machines we had, who'd think that they wouldnt work with SP2 ;). All our mathematics software worked just fine, so not much to comment on there.. EDIT: Oddly enough, these were the machines that we didnt reformat after reciving our shipment from Dell. We used the image that Dell has custom made for us (have I mentioned how lazy we are :P). We'll never do that again :P
Since then, I've slip streamed SP2 right into our master WinXP disks, so the entire thing is installed right from the initial install cd. Needless to say we only install one machine and then clone it to the rest of the batch (lazy :P)..

without imaging i'd still be manually upgrading the entire campus right now(two months after we started *Shudders*)
