Hello all,

My first image post here at CG. This is part of a planned series on feathers and flight. I thought it would be interesting to see an enormous feather made up of birds. What I've shown here is to be an altar with scores of birds perched on the feather shaped construct. I plan to have a bunch of birds flying around as well. Below on the steps will be pilgrims arriving to pay homage.

I know the shapes are very light and don't read at the moment but that will develope shortly.

Crits and suggestions are most welcome.

Very imaginative concept. I love it.

The background clouds and large feather look great so far. Keep it up, I have a feeling this is going to look really cool once your finished.
Keep us posted.

Hi again. Here is an update with a few pilgrims roughed in. I'm itching for some pretty intense detail work on this one. :)

I think I'm done for the night. I've added more detail work on the feather and put in some water (still in progress).

very impressive cloudwork, and nice concept

you need to fix perspective on the 2 pillars, since you are looking upwards, the pillars need to follow that perspective aswell..

Fashmir,

Wow! This is fantastic! What gave you the idea to do this?

Cheers, :)

Brittany- Thanks for the kind words and jumping in to be the first to comment.

Stalk-Von-Dark- Thanks to you as well for your encouragement.

Goliath- Thank you for the praise and especially for the nudge on the perspective of the pillars. You are right. I had them looking like paper cut-outs with no depth. I've taken your crit to heart (see below) let me know what you think.

Rebeccak- Thanks for the "wow" :D. The idea came from a brainstorming session I did where I wanted to explore different treatments of a feather (see sketch page below). My initial sketch of a feather made of birds was further developed by imagining a situation in which such an occurance could plausibly exist. So I settled on a notion of a world in which birds are huge and flight is worshiped.

Thanks again all for the encouragement. I'll keep posting.

The sketch that inspired this work is the one second from the top on the left. It is the least developed on the sketch page, but for me became the most compelling. I plan to explore the rest of these thumbnail sketches further.

Hello again. Here is another update and a couple of close-ups. I have set myself a task with the birds I have to paint. I wonder how long it will take me.

well nice progress.

the pillars seem to follow your perspective correctly, exept at the bottom, the right pillar sinks below the left one, and theres a line thats a bit wrong :P
you would probably notice your self when you are going to detail them, but anyway

and i love the 2 front characters helmets, it fits this image so nice :D

Goliath- Thanks. My sketch work is always a bit too sloppy. I usually clean it up pretty good in the process of detailing but I want to reign myself in a bit on starting a painting from such rough under-structure. I need to do all my rough work and then a refined drawing- THEN paint. :)

Great concept and I love the colors and clouds. I really want to see this one finished. I like the figures with the bird masks to.

Here's another update. It's been a little while since I've had time and energy to put to this. Mostly concentrated on the left pillar. I also did a little design work on the birds in Zbrush. Below is a shot of the steps I took to get the kind of bird I want. Basically it's an eagle parrot hybrid. I wanted the birds to be imposing but not completely threatening.

Please crit the bird design.

Cool concept and really nice execution so far. Love the feather sculpture and the cloud background is very well done. Not crazy about the two forground figures, especially the one on the bottom right of my screen. If the 'human' figures are shown to give a sense of scale then the birds must be enourmous! Are they really supposed to dwarf the humans?

PixelPlay- Thanks for the response. Please elaborate on improvements for the two foreground figures (keeping in mind that these are first run sketches plopped in). I do want the birds to seem enormous. See my quote from post #8 below.
