need some help setting up wireless network. my cuz and i want to play lan games. first of all i dont have dsl. my cuz got a laptop with wireless access. i have a nic on my pc, so i purchased a wireless router hooked it up. then i went to the control panel to setup the wireless netowrk and then after that i went through the network setup wizard. once done with everything it gave me a network key so i can add other pcs to the network. the home network setup instructed me to go to the other computer that is going to be on the network and put the xp cd in and do a home network setup there aslo. once i was done setting everything up on the laptop it showed the name of my computer and said the connection was excellent. on my computer it dosent show his pc name at all. i have file sharing turned on on both the laptop and pc, but i tried sharing files and it dosent show up. i am new to setting up a network so please bare with me. can anyone give me some advice on what i am doing wrong.

One for gaming purposes.. wireless sucks unless you get a gaming specific one like DLink offers. As for your current issue if you have one installed disable the Firewall.. the one Microsoft XP has will block other machines on your network and so will most 3rd party ones as well.

i got the networking part of it to work as far as the games go. i got doom 3 and unreal 2k3 to work across the network when a game is created on either machine. however as far as file sharing i dont see a file thats put in the shared folder on either machine. ill try what you say about the firewall. thanks for the response. :)

Wifi only adds between 1-4ms to a lan ping depending on speed and network cards. as for the file sharing, some modern routers treat wifi like a WAN port and filter everything going through, which would stop filesharing

hey kaiser if that will stop file sharing, is there any way to make it work.

whats the make of your wifi router thingy?, also can you see the computer you are trying to get files from?

you you have user accounts on your PC and Laptop are they the same? what files have you shared? are they hidden?

its a belkin wireless router, and i can't see the other computer. the files on the laptop and pc aren't hidden, and i tried to share a notepad file between pc and laptop but it dosen't show on either one. i put the file in the shared documents folder. i even created a new shared folder on both computers and the shared folder dosen't show up on either one.i only have one user account on my pc, the laptop is my cousins so the accounts are different.

when i go into view workgroup computers it shows the hour glass for a few minutes and gives an error saying that "duttyfoot (which is the name i give my pc) is not accessible. and i might not have permission to use this netowrk resource. contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. the list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available." not sure why it would give that error.

not sure what i could have done wrong when i was setting everything up. i can play doom 3 or unreal with my cuz accross the network with no problem.

i just ran a windows network diagnostics and it showed that the:

1. network adapters failed.
2. 3com fast ethernet controller failed
3. ip address failed

4. wan miniport (ip) failed
5 default ip gateway failed
6. dnsserverSearchOrder failed
7. both Ip address under the dnsserver search order failed
8. another ip address failed
9. all ips under the wan minport failed

i noticed in device manager that the mac bridge minport was disabled so i just enabled it. what does the mac bridge minport do.

i ran the diagnostics again and nothing changed.

Try clearing the memory on your router by holding its reset button for 15 seconds(there should be a small hole somewhere for a paper clip).

Next, assuming that your network card's drivers are installed, and everything works alright from the computer end. With your computer connected to Port 1 on the router, go to start-->Control Panels-->Network Connections.

In Network Connections, "Local Area Connection" should say connected. If it says that it is connected, right click on it, and select properties. In the "This connection uses the following items," double click TCP/IP. Make sure that your computer is set to "obtain an IP automatically." "Obtain DNS automatically" should also be enabled.

Now, go back to the Network Connections window, and double click on Local Area Connection. It should display the connection status window. If you click on the Support tab, it will give you your machine's IP address and other information.

If your IP address shows up as 192.168.0.1, it means that your computer has Internet Connection Sharing enabled (can be disabled by going to properties for the connection, clicking on the Advanced tab and unchecking the "Allow other network users to connect to the internet through this computer"). If your IP shows up as 169.XXX.XXX.XXX there is something wrong with your connection to the router, and you may be using a crossover cable instead of a patch cable.

If your address shows up as anything other than 192.168.0.1 ie 192.168.xxx.xxx.xxx, you are in good shape. The next number in the Local Area Connection Support tab that you need is the Default Gateway. This is the address of your router. Take this number and enter it into Internet Explorer, and it should take you to your router's configuration page. Go through the setup wizard, and give your access point a name. Leave WEP disabled for the time being. You can enable WEP later when you know that all your hardware works.

From there, set up the laptop to connect to your wireless router, and things should just magically work:)

I'm not sure about this, but is one of you running XP Pro, and the other running XP Home? I think that Home sometimes has trouble seeing computers in other workgroups.

If he can see your shared drives, then it means that your two machines are able to talk to eachother. So you should be able to connect directly to his shared drives by typing \\hiscomputername or \\hisipaddress.

Good luck.
