View Full Version : Simple Mapping Problem - Pls Help !!!
Hi all,
i am tex mapping a road. my model is a box with about 100 segments and then deformed using PATH DEFORM. my spline has no no corners - just beziers
i am getting very strange results - i am applying the tex map on the box before the PATH DEFORM in the stack so that the tex map follows the shape once deformed, but i seem to be getting odd mapping distortion and blurs - please see the images posted.
if anyone knows of a fix to this i would be very greatful!
i have tried applying the same map to other roads created in a different way - eg, poly extruded down the spline, rectangle lofted down the spline but i get the same result.
by the way, i am using max 5.
any help is appreciated

That's really bizarre... I'm racking my brain trying to figure it out.... :surprised
I'm sure the solution is really simple, it's just evading my brain right now....

If the road is one object is there any chance you can open up the UV's and post a screen grab. That should give us a few more clues....

hi,
could you please explain what you mean by "open up the UV's"?
i know a little about mapping but dont understand this request. do you mean put a box UV on it and TEXPORT an image?
plese help, then i can help you help me - if that makes sense : )
thanks Gary

Just apply an Unwrap UVW modifier. Then hit edit and you will be able to see the actual UV placement on the texture you have applied. I'm not sure if you can export directly from the Edit UVW's dialigue. But if not just take a screen grab and post it.
It would be a great idea to try and master this aspect of 3D as it is a critaical stage in the 3D process.
I hope this helps...

If you open up the modifier list and scroll down with your mouse wheel does your modifier list shudder up and down???
Just thought I would ask.

hi again,
i have posed a grab of my UV editor - as you can see it is straight forward as a planner UV has been placed in the stack before the PATH DEFORMATION.
The wheel question: no, the wheel does not scroll the list in the modifier stack - why?
thanks again

Have you got any other maps in any other channels other than the diffuse?
Or maybe you have forgotten about an alpha on your map?
It's really hard to say.

i have tried various renders - with /without bumps/speculars - although the renders look different the strange imperfections are still there even when its just a difuse map. and no, there arnt any alphas in the map.

Here's hoping.
Have a look at the object in the view port without textures being displayed. If those shapes are still there then it is most likely your smoothing groups. To fix it select the object. Then go to sub-object, element select the entire track so it turns red completely. Then scroll down to your smoothing groups. Check clear all and then auto smooth.
I really hope this will sort your problem out. If not I'm afraid I'm at a loss
