how do i achieve muscle deforming under the skin w/o the use if plugs? i understand that a clever use of soft body dynamics coupled w clusters iver a sphere would be the obvious way to create it. but it may be too expensive to compute. anybody knows a better way? or has anybody improved upon this technique?

there really isn't a way without plugins.
Influence objects will give you "muscle deforming under the skin" and "draging" the skin around with it.. but not "skin sliding over muscle"... which of course is what we all want.. plus they are slow as all hell...
nurbs as sculpt deformers could be a solution, as sculpts "slide", but they are pretty... ummm.. well... useless would be the word... unless they have made huge improvements in 7 (not bothering with that for now)

if you want real muscle defs use this http://www.cometdigital.com/

thanks for the replies...yes, sculpt deformer are cheap, and thats what i am doing..unfortunately,its too cheesy and pretty...well, useless...

it seems that we are yet to see a software package that incorporates a native muscle system...
do we have free plugs for that? i think max has a cheap script for this..wonder if maya has them

Check out CGToolKit's Muscle TK. I have just heard of it, its about $60. Anyway, if you do check it out or if anyone else has checked it out, do give me a review

from what I've heard, the comet plugin is worth the extra $100 (something like that) they are both cheep though.. hell, get 'em both and see what you like for that price..

Who is flaming sculpt deformers here? they are well, ah, kind of cheap ( actually free!), but with a little bit of MEL and fiddling around with those options, they are not that bad. I sometimes use them, like a chewing character or stuff like that. But for a complete character writing a system to handle dozens or hundreds of sculpt deformers, could be more expensive than spending some money on a commercial solution. BTW there were some free muscle scripts floating around, but me too dumb to get them going, threw them away.

cheers

Thats the one I use. I personally thinck it rocks once you get the hang of it its real easy and fast to set up. Wich I like. The guy is awsome he is reall godd with responding to suport. I highlly recomend it. And you can can achive sliding if you set up the skin to be a soft body. I have personally done it for over 5 creatures. Sorry can't acutally show them but the tool is well worth it. And on top of that Michael Commet is his lead td so I thinck Peter's tool is the free version of the Commet muscle plug in. Don't quote me on that is just my 2 cents. Get it while is still free.

FWIW I have started on a MAC port of cMuscleSystem also...not sure when it will be out yet.
Of course based on the title of the this thread, that may be irrelevant...heh.

Using nurbs curves with as few cvs as possible as influence objects runs pretty well on the old clunkers we have at work. Yeah you don't get that cool under-skin slide. I think one of the grad students I knew did a rig with spring deformers. I've heard of wrap deformers being used for muscles. Never tried either of those. I usually have toon-styled stuff on my plate, and I generally get by with tricky weight-painting to fake muscle deformation.

Hey Mr. Comet, do you know Walt Behrnes?

Thanks for the comments.

Yes future upgrades for registered users will be less then say buying the complete package over again.

Michael

thank you very much. the price is very enticing. for some 60 bucks you get a production ready and very scalable plugin with lots of potential. 60 bucks still bites in the pocket but his is one investment i will be considering when my Xmas bonus arrives :-) do you still keep your old works uploaded on the net?

See my sig file for links to my sites and work.

Not sure about the $60. The cMuscleSystem plugin is currently $250.00.
