Posted this in technical and hardware by error, sorry, it more fits in here.
Hi,
Im looking for a codec information. Somewhere around this huge internet I can find info on a specific codec i'm interested in. But there are hundreds of codecs and looking for information about each of them separately won't lead me to practical information soon.
I am looking for a place with some practical information on widely used, most popular codecs. Or on just codecs for quick time container, or just avi.... Or comparison of codecs, and where are they used and why..... There used to be a good knowledge base on codes on http://www.discreet.com/support/codec, but I can't find it there any more, I was originaly looking for a simmilar page. But now decided to start a topic and try to put a helpful list together.
I believe you people know places on internet or in books. I started a thread because that kind of an info would be usefull to other people too.
Just throw everything you got on codecs: web pages, forums, book recommendations, what codecs you use in your production and why...... bla, bla.....
It might take some time to put this all together. Lets see:
I think everybody knows, but what is a codec?
http://www.codecreview.com/ - audio codecs reviews.
http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/c/codec.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codec - some info (and links) on specific codecs here too
http://www.mycableshop.com/techarticles/codec.htm - .. and what does it do.

If you can't find the information on some of these sites go to the links (most of them have links about related info).
Still haven't find a site with practical aproach, that tells what codec should be used (or is generaly used in industry) for specific targeted output media. Or serious codec comparison page.
