View Full Version : Faces to layers, select faces by material?

Need help:

Can Maya select faces by the material name?
I brought this object over from Lightwave and it came in as one object, one layer.
I would like to select the faces of the boots or the bracelets to cut them into their own layer.
Is there a feature or a plugin that does that?

In hypershade, you can RMB (and hold it down) on a material and choose "select objects with material" This will select all the faces using that material, then RMB on the mesh and choose face mode and then extract them into their own object so you can assign separate layers for them.

ITS ALL ONE OBJECT
so when i slect object from the material, it selects the entire object ...see image.

you cant

What you can do is select the faces, go to create->Sets->Quick Selection Sets to be able to quickly select the faces when u need.
To select the set, go to Edit->Quick select sets->pick what u made

you cant

It works perfectly here...i remember it didnt work on 6.0.1 but it works great on 6.5 now ...selects exactly the faces of specified SG

It doesnt matter if its one object, when you "select objects using material" it highlights the faces that use that material, you just then need to go into face component mode and chip them off or whatever you want to do with them.

If this isnt working for you, perhaps you could give us a step-by-step desciption of what you do (because its fine for me and has been for several maya versions)? :)

STEP BY STEP
Okay. I am importing a mesh (character below) into Maya,
In Object mode, when I select the mesh, the entire thing highlights in green.
What I want to do, is go to Hypershade and select the FACES of the Bracelet that it is attached to.

Its like QuickSelectionSets I guess.
Is there a way (melscript) to convert faces that effected by a shader and convert them to quick selection sets.

yeah i don't have a problem doing that either.

works fine on a single object with multiple shaders. just as slinkyman said, in the hypershade right mouse press over one of the applied materials and do the select object with material. selects just the faces with the material.

I don't know what the problem is. unless it has to do something with imported materials.

I stand corrected, I guess since my mesh was dense I never saw the surface highlight.

Only when I did as you said and hit the "w" key to do some transformaions did i see it grab just those polys.

Is there way to control display properties when it concerns highlighting so can see even in a dense mesh.

well you can change the color of the highlighted components in your preferences. But yor best bet is just hittin '4' real quick and switch it over to wireframe mode.
