I can't get my skylights to work with Mental Ray. i see in the galleries where they talk about doing it, and whenever i seem to use one, MR doesn't even seem to notice it. so my question is how do i get MR to use the skylight?

1) Place a skylight in your scene.
2) Turn on Final Gather.

Jeff, is there any way to get results similar to using skylight with the lighttracer?

1) Place a skylight in your scene.
2) Turn on Light Tracer.

:)

Seriously, that's all there is too it. Play with the number of samples to get faster renders. You can lower them down to 50 and still get decent results.

Hmm, as far as i know if you assigned MR as a renderer you dont have the option of the light tracer anymore.
So the only function you can play is the final gather and perhaps with the skylight map and of course the Mutliply....

But probably i have misunderstood you JHaywood,
besides i loved you Tip with the Glow GI thing...:scream: really cool.

What do you mean Ian ? Is there a certain thing you want to "Clone" ?

Yup, just as James said, it's basically the same process as MR. There's a thread where we compaired MR, Vray, Scanline, and Brazil for basic skylight tests here:
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=148161&page=3
and other than the scanline render was a little bit slower than some of the others, there's not much difference at all. Of course the speed issue was probably my fault since I don't use light tracer that often.

In my view with the new 3.4 version of mental ray and the implemented light bounce function of the FG its almost like a normal
light tracer render, apart from rendertime which is much faster.

I couldnt find big differences between both...
The Bounce functions is a very nice feature in my view...

JHaywood, I was referring to getting nice soft shadows with MR and skylight, similar to the nice shadows you can get with skylight and the lighttracer. I always have difficulty getting the MR shadows to look accurate... they always seem very broad and missing details.

I'm just doing some test renders now. Seems I may have just overlooked setting FG sample radius. I've been just cranking the overall samples up and not changing radius. That's probably why I have been getting poor results with skylight in MR.

Any specific tips with the radius settings in FG?

We are just talking about that and other issues of Mr in this thread here...

http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=258146

I think that will help....
