View Full Version : Living Toons - Character - Aaron
Aaron 11-05-2002, 06:34 AM Well, it's about time I get off my butt and actually do this (thanks to the guys in #cgtalk, especially Carm3d and King_mob, for pushing me on this one ;) ). I've been lurking here long enough -- it's time to get some work done =)
Preliminary thoughts: I think I'm going to just do an actual caricature of myself. I've been meaning to do a 3d self portrait for so long, this is as good an excuse as any to actually get it done. I'm really quite inexperienced with modeling (I think I've done maybe 5 models my whole life, but I'm just getting into my majour) so it will be ... interesting ... to see how this goes =)
Tomorrow I'll scan in and post some of my more recent self portrait sketches (I try to do what Andrew Jones does and do a self-portrait a day, though it's usually more like 6 self portraits one night, 5 another, and so on). Maybe you all can give me some thoughts on what features to play up =)
Anywho, more tomorrow!
-Aaron.

Ok, as promised, here are some sketches. This first one is just a collage of some quick ink self portraits I did to get some emotions down -- I might use these emotions, so having a hard copy is nice. Nothing fancy, just letting you guys know what I look like. These are pretty rough, but it gives a pretty good feel for how I look. I do wear glasses, which I may show in my final caricature, but I can't draw with my glasses on -- it gives me a splitting headache, so you'll never see me do a self-portrait with glasses =)
The second image (next post) is a collage of concept sketches I just threw down. Again, scanned in from paper; the originals are non-photo blue pencil with ink, in case you're curious.
Some thoughts: I have a tendency to go a few days without shaving because I'm really lazy and I hate razor burn; after a few days my cheeks get rather ... furry =) My final caricature will probably reflect this. Now, in preparation for this project, I spent the afternoon talking to some of my classmates (being an art student has its upsides!) They suggested that my most individual and prominent features are my longish face and my heavy eyelids. I'm going to play those up. Ignore the clawlike arms on the model sheet-style drawing I did in the upper right corner of the second image -- I'll fix that later.
As for my hobby ... ok, I know this may sound a bit strange, but I love to crochet. My mum taught me over the summer, and I've been hooked ever since (no pun intended). I just really took to it -- it's quite relaxing; I reccomend it to everyone who has a bit of extra stress in their life =) I ran it by lildragon and he said it's cool if I use a transparency map for a crocheted item, so I hope to set my character up working on a crochet scarf and getting frustrated with it. We'll see how long that idea lasts ;)
Anywho, here are the pics. Feedback, comments and critiques are certainly welcome. Be bold! If you see something wrong, by god, tell me! :p I can post zooms on particular images if you want them, for better critiques =)
Ciao,
-Aaron.

Here's my model sheet -- I colourized it to give me a decent idea of how i want the final product to look. I'll split this in half and paste it on two planes when I start moddling, of course, but I just wanted to get any critiques you guys might have (I figure someone must have some thoughts on my concept work ;) )
My final composition should have this guy (me) sitting on a stool working on his crochet and having no great time of it. If that doesn't work, I'll probably model my guitar (Takamine Jasmine pure acoustic, in case anyone is wondering) and have me playing it on said stool. =)
Anywho, here's the model sheet.
Cheers,
-Aaron.
