Alrighty :)

I'm gonna enter this one....just because I've been promising myself I'd enter a challenge before year-end, and I'm running out of time.

Don't have a pic of myself to put up (as a base for the charicature) as there's a reason I avoided the "show a pic of yourself" thread :D

I'll put up some concept stuff soon, basically one of my fave things to do away from the 'puter is play Bass. I'm a frustrated musician, so I figure that's a good way to portray myself....

must get drawing......

Glad to see you enter a challenge ... good luck!

Gary!!

Finally a post from you on the forum :D

No guarantees this is gonna be any good, modelling is not my strong point, but lets see how it goes....

Right-o

Here's a quick 'n nasty sketch for starters. My drawing is really cack, so I scanned it and cleaned it up in illustrator. I need to exaggerate some features more.......I'm thinking the bass itself will be like a swiss army knife amongst basses :D

That's meant to be a baseball cap on my head, and the rest is pretty much what I wear on a daily basis.

This image will hopefully evolve over the next few days, I'm hoping to get 90% of the stuff down before I even begin modelling.

Looking good!!

Glad to see I'm not going to be the only entry with a guitar by my side! :buttrock: :buttrock:

But, then again, yours looks like a bass... right?
Maybe after this is all done, we can put ours together and form a virtual band.
Keep it up!

thanks :)

Yeah it's a bass, with a difference....which will become apparent when the modelling starts.

Virtual band sounds like fun, just hope I can get my modelling out of "sucking" stage to "half decent"....which was the main motivation behind me entering this challenge.

'k....

Some basic shading and various other tweaks...I love this new Wacom :)

Will add some more detail, and then get to drawing the model sheets, posting updates as I go.

Never been this organised before :D

Cool:thumbsup:

No matter how basic, illustrator images are always visually harmonious to me.

Keep up the pace!

Thanks Dirk:D

I'm debating whether I should try modelling the 'toon with hard edges in a style similar to the sketches......I think I'll take things as they come and make that decision once I've actually started the 3D....

...start of the modelling sheet.

Just started drawing the ortho views....having quite a lot of fun actually :D

Some closeups of the head (with detail, which is currently missing) tonight if I have time.....

Decided to try the pants....

This is after about an hours modelling

unsmoothed version:

..and the smoothed version:

I will spend some time improving the creases and folds in the cloth, but I want a sorta "baggy" thing going on anyway :D

Edit: Just uploaded more shots of the pants...have tweaked a bit. Any comments? does it look exaggerated enough? I'm counting on the simple folds, bagginess and wide bottoms to lend it that cartoony feel.

Decided to render what I'd done so far...

Basic shoes I know, but I'm gonna do everything including the head in one pass, and then go back and tweak details.....

Thanks for the comments guys

I'll hopefully have his (still don't think of him as "me") clothes done this weekend and then move onto the head, by which time I'll post the closeup sketch of the head for reference.

Trying to decide how much detail I should model and what I should leave for bump maps.....

Thanks Pigwater!

OK here's the latest render, spent some time tweaking his shoes, minor adjustments to the pants (redid the utility pocket), and the most obvious update is the sweatshirt...

Comments/crits/suggestions are always welcome

I'm happy with the progress on this, to be honest I was dead scared of the modelling

Oh yeah, some detail on various bits 'n bobs....

Sorry about the compression, the quest for a decent host continues :D

Very nice work so far man.
What program are you modeling in?

We've got almost the same taste in clothing. :D

Thanks!

Your comment about similar taste in clothes, LOL :D

I've been ripped mercilessly by friends and colleagues for my sloppy appearance, but hey, I'm comfortable...

Modelling in Max 5, all polys.

Latest render....

Some adjustments to the top, added seams, made his t-shirt hang out more. Minor concern that his torso is too bulky, so perhaps I should make him thin on top...I don't have particularly broad shoulders even tho I'm tall.....any suggestions?

Gonna move onto the head now, which'll define his personality a lot more, so the next update will have a head :D

Been a while since I last updated....real life has sorta kicked in a bit the past few days....

I'm still working on him tho, but the next shots I post will feature loads of new stuff. Probably been uploading changes that are too minor to warrant it......

watch this space :D
