View Full Version : How short are those "insane" time limits?
LadyMedusa 08-31-2005, 03:47 PM I've heard a few people say that consept artists, book illustrators and modellers, maybe animators too, have insane time limits. How "insanely" short are we talking about? Are they even that insane?
Just whant to know what the bosses generally expects of us.
Sorry if it's been asked before.

Best quote we ever had to make:
Animation for game intro. 5 minutes long Schedule of 5 days, 4 page brief, first two words "Human army..."
Admittedly, that job didn't get done.

Good to know. That seems indeed a little insane to me aswell, but personally I haven't tried animating, I just think it's a little hard-like to do "fast". Is that the average time limit
That job didn't get done?! D: What happened, did you get fired or did you (the team) just cancel it all?

As a game animator, my tasks are usually handed to me in lists: walk, run, fall, stand, die, attack1, attack2, etc etc etc.
I always schedule a day per item.
That being said, I might do 2 or 3 animations one day (simple ones: idles, emotes,) and then spend 2 or 3 days on another (complex or often seen ones: walks, runs, deaths.) It usually averages out to an animation per day. It takes me about a month to work through an animation suite for a game character.
All of this varys from project to project and character to character. The above estimates are typical human figure, sans facial animation. Add facial animation, or a really complex character, those figure start going up.

TV spots usually are the most time pressing ( and insane in description...i dare say..) ..at least in my knowledge.
Monday 10 minutes before u leave from work u are called to a meeting. U leave from that one at 10 o'clock and reach your apartment at midnight...they call u at 8 in the morning to go start modeling 'cuase the concept/story board artist stayed up all night ....It's Tuesday...around noon they tell u that u have only tonight for animation and tommorow by mid day u must have the render layers ..OF THE FREAKING ANIMATION..which u haven't done yet ...READY for the compositor to work :scream: :scream: ...and then ..u...u stop thinking and u run like hell...wensday night ..u come home dead ..u open the tv ..u happen to fall on the tv spot u made just 3 hours ago...u throw a tomatoe on tv ...occasionally and a glass of fine scotch  ...u log in CGtalk..and u see how cool stuff people make while your head was bombarded with horses**t 2 and 1/2 days...
Hope it helps......

We had a shot for a recent movie that we had to do in 2 days, from modeling to final composite. That's probably the tightest time frame I've had so far.

Adam- that doesn't sound that "insane" :)
That means there is still hope for the "slower" people :) That made my day.
Dimi- Hahaha. Don't tell me that's based on a true experience? :o
Bill- 2 days seems indeed tight for modeling, I think. What is the normal limit?

"are you done yet?", 5 min. later "are you done yet?", 5 min. later... An endless cycle. (He works whit those comercials that comes in the post, loads of stress there aswell)
Don't waste that scotch next time ;)

For a theme park in Quatar i had to create three characters, animate them doing sports activities and render them out in 2 days.... I made it (jerky animation but nothing better was possible for the timeframe) and i am really proud of it..... 2 days with no sleep at all....
And another one was an application that we had to create for a best multimedia production in Greece contest (in 2002) and me along with 6 other friends of mine stayed awake and worked non-stop for about 5 days (the only time we slept was when we rendered the video and 3d for it... in turns so that if something went wrong we could make it right).... I slept for 26 hours afterwards and we did win.... That was one of the best moments in my "career"...

I know it doesn't sound that insane...it wasn't supposed to. You were saying you wanted to know what bosses expected, and I was just relating some average timetables. Its not always insane. I prefer it that way.
Im glad it made your day.

Exactly what I was hoping to hear :)
It's just that some people mean that you guys work on only insane time limits. I was expecting the average to be tighter, to tell the truth.
So 3d related jobs generally take a day or two, or a little more, what about the 2d related jobs?
