Hi, everyone! I'm looking for crits on an illo I'm working on -- it's a personal project. Specifically, I'm having trouble with the lighting -- the way the foreground and BG are releating to one another. (And oh! the spider's still missing a couple legs. Woops!). All crits/comments welcome.

The lighting doesn't look to bad. Just make the shadows darker. You should be able to see if some thing is not right. Ordinarily stay away from grays and blacks in the shadow areas. Dark red browns or purples looks nice or chose a color that is working with your color plan and work with a dark shade of that color.

Hey, thanks for the advice. For some reason, when I was zoomed in at 100% I thought my shadows, like on muffet's skin, were more blue/purple but then when zoomed out it was washed out, dull, lifeless and desaturated. You were right. I needed to go darker. It's still far from done, but I think I'm leaning toward the right levels now. Here's the latest progress shot:

Yes that really looks better. I love that crazy spider. Since you have a kind of cartoony style here you might consider boosting the saturation of the whole painting alittle, unless your are going for a faded old storybook look.
