Well - I was really not happy after uploading my first picture - so I went at it again :)
Somewhat happier with the outcome of this one. Its inspired by the CD-cover of one of my many John Lee Hooker CD's which I obviously had going while doing this.
Great pics from everyone else so far - looking forward to seeing what else might show

Hi all. This was done (at night feeling not too happy) with ink on paper, 80 minutes. hope u like my style. crits welcome! see you
>> thanks for the comments. yes the puddle of tears is not underneath her eye. Why? I don't know. Ink is so hard to erase...
But let's say its rain :). Although some minor faults are the rain not visibly splashing on the stones on the foreground and the rain drops seeming to fall upwards :)

jmBoekenstain - very moody and dark. good use of perspective and lovely wet hair.
ashwin911 - good use of colors; despite the relatively cheerful colors the sadness of the main character come though clearly. Nice contrast with color/mood.
luciferous - hair, face and particularly the mouth are well done. The water drops on the face may be too viscous (thick) - doesn't look like water in places on the check. However, the ambiguity between rain/tears is nice.
rawwad - looks like we had a similar idea -- but you have much greater patience to complete all the background people! The ciggy is a nice touch; Also, having the figure looking up adds an interesting poignancy
Zoontjens - The use of traditional materials stands out in this collection. Very nice - the ink gives a lovely wet feeling. Reminicent of John Tenniel (illustator of Alice in Wonderland); Only critique I can see is that the tears running down her face probably wouldn't land on the window sill... her face is too far back for the puddle. But wow, excellent work!
Koekebakker - nice composition and light work; I like the neon sign and the car lights are superb
DreamMaster - good lightning. I didn't notice the figure until you pointed it out.
keko - lots of nice detail; The house is well designed and cats appropriately creepy. Would the cat on the stair really stay in the rain?
J Cae - nice design and color choices for the clothes; dramatic composition.

Here's mine. Photoshop + Painter. Around 80 minutes or so(+30 minutes refining). I was trying to make it looks like a traditional chinese painting but I couldn't. It was a pretty good experiment even though it wasn't a success.

Ok I hope I didn't forget anyone:
jmBoekestein: Nice comp and evocation of emotion.
Zyrinx: Good idea
Blackpot: Love the hat; try blocking in colors first, that way they don’t get so muddied.
Overchord: I like the rain on the hat; both are great ideas playing the blues.
Hexaditidom: very true concept…
Luciferous: watch your facial structure: the far cheek is a bit extruded which I bet is the cause for the small sided mouth and the far out eye.
GaryBedell: I share her tears
Rawwad: Nice composition, love the soaked smoke and the bg is awesome *phew
Zoontjens: Excellent rendering
CodeNothing: love it
Koekebakker: and he’s off to the liquor store.
DreamMaster: faint – but I see him
Keko: great layout design
Robertt: textured?
Danielh68: way to push the silhouette. Reminds me of max payne
Gardogg: keep up the dsging and you’ll go places. I would have added a clutched fist to the floating ore (my 2 cents)
Swizzle: I feel that...rough…..
J Cae: vary the brush softness! I’d try blocking the colors in with a hard-edged brush then just do a bit of blending
GauntMan: he has a see-through trench coat? I like the glow of his face.
Pipichu: I’d say it’s a bang up job in that style. I really like it - great use of textures.
I hope I take part tommorow too

@GauntMan: Thank you.
@MattVogt: I'm not sure what you mean. I used hard-edges for all my paintings. I would try to even out the blending if I had more time.

CodeNothing, ok that's very very bad weather comming your way :)
keko, nice loose style. My cat wouldn't stay on the porch with me like those cats in your sketch...
pipichu, very nice. The bamboos in the background and grass are of the same scale as those in the foreground. This is a bit confusing I think.

jmBoekestein: nice! and very moody. lacks a bit of definition though. unfortunately, cause the atmosphere is already there and real good!

Koekebakker: Nice atmosphere! works really well!
MattVogt: hehe, nice! The values are a bit off though I think.

Great stuff again.
Rawwad, nice feel to it. Reminds me of Sin city's opening scene. :p
Barbapapa, that's neat, very 'strokey', you got your anatomy down well. I like that.
Zoontjens, very nice emotive face, good style.
Codenothing, always the cool colours in your paintings, love that, really great.
koekebakker, that's good, you could have gone way brighter on the contrast I think. I'd go as far as to hide things behind the brightly exposed parts. Nice one.
Dreammaster, that's a very, very small person. :D
Keko, nice... cool moody...
Gauntman, thanks... Never did much with backrgounds, nice to know it worked. :D
Pipichu, I'm quite amazed at how readable your works are, odd and strange and cute figures. Good stuff. :)
MattVoght, thx :D... you should try setting a limit to the time you spend. It helps to push yourself. I like it though. :)
digitalEmbryo, love that. Reminds me of saladfingers. heheheh... urh...
StephanS, thanks! Most time did go into setting the right mood... Really love yours... grea colours.

jmboekestien nice capture off mood really nice. I also like the atmosphere feel that is also there. i think the figure in the foreground could use a bit of contrast to really push the depth of the atmosphere however. but still really strong
stephan s very nice love the colors reminds me of rainy days in manhattan

JCae: it just looks really soft to me; it could be the opacity – such as where her chin meets her neck. I’d really make it noticeable by giving it a heavy line along the chin. The characters seem to be following the rules of perspective. Keep it up
Digital_embryo: I love the character the hood is well done like how the face is looking down. I mean great pose!
Alice: That's cute, cool hydrant
JakobWelner: great start! Good sense of scale
Kevinwalker: I like that song…
Robertt: looks very traditional, I’d say I scanned it.
Stephan.s: wow great work, my favorite so far love the white and orange lighting. Good point - yep my values are hella off it’s like an illuminated glowing city… next dsg I’ll rock the place
jmBoekestein: Yep I haven’t done a dsg for so long I thought I’d ease into it slowly, next round will be quicker.
good works everyone

Painter IX 1 hour "Come out of the Rain"
Concept: Ok, the concept started out as being a little girl with an umbrella going inside the house. Dry outside and raining inside the house to allude to a storm being inside the house. (Abuse, problems, ect.) Well, I screwed up and was sort of locked into the design. I didn't have time today to start over and so it ended like it ended.
Please critique...Still a beginner.

I like how you did the curtains, the rain is all good, but the scene is a little confusing and blurry. I'm not sure what is going on. Maybe a little more focus on detail and a theme would be good. I can't tell if we are looking through a window or what. And if we're looking through a window, then why is the figure not below us. Keep up the sketching though. You'll be all right!
Robertt
08-31-2005, 10:37 PM
Robertt: looks very traditional, I’d say I scanned it.
Cool, very interesting :) To elaborate, I used several tweaked "wet media" brushes in PSE (mainly to higher scatter rates, lower opacity) and kept going with those in between some dissolve brush passes. The original was done at 2048x2048 and resized for web viewing.
Occasionally I save my work in stages (mostly in 3d but not often enough with my 2d stuff), but it was the case with this piece, so here's what it looked like at an earlier stage:

I'm totally in love with the atmosphere in your sketch Keko!

rawwad - very good - I like the separtation of the main character from the background - the cigarette says it all! Great mood
Koekebakker - very good mood - (I know those days! and walked down that street)
