Is there a site that has DEMs for places other than the US? I am particularly interested in Gibraltar, as I have just come back from a cruise that stopped there.

The only DEMs I can find are for the continental US. Any ideas?

Even greyscale heightmaps will do.

hey

there are *many* places, tho the sources usually are the same.

a pretty practical way for our purposes is this one here:

USGS Seamless Data Distribution System
National Center for Earth Resources Observation
EROS

http://seamless.usgs.gov/
http://seamless.usgs.gov/website/seamless/viewer.php

non-US data usually come with a resolution of 90m.
you define the area of interest in the interface, and then will be presented with
available formats.

a pretty short way is to choose GeoTIF, which then youd convert to BMP (keeping a backup of the original, because its georeferenced).
But you can choose pretty much any format, and then convert to BMP via Globalmapper.

Mind:
*
Gibraltar is a rather small area, so you may not be too happy with these 90m DEMs.

*
Gibraltar is in Europe, so you may do better than 90m.
Perhaps someone else here knows a place specialized on Europe or GB, i wouldnt be surprized if there was one.

*
You may wanna play with Google Earth, which also has information about available footage.

*
You can try, with artistic licence, to 'enhance' the 90m DEM, if its all you have, and if youre unhappy with it.

As far as I know - and I would love to be proved wrong! - the STRS 90 meter data is the best that's freely available for UK & Europe.

Here in the UK the Ordnance Survey used to have high res data for the UK available, but it was ridiculously expensive.

Good luck with your search, and if you find something better, please let us know! :)

... and commercial agencies may let you have some limited material for free if you propose an interesting experimental approach. (on the phone, rather than by email...)

Gibraltar, beeing a popular landmark, could be a bit harder to get tho.

http://www.mapmart.com/

I've gotten maps from Colombia and Mexico there. 90m. About US$15 for an area like Gibraltar.

Jorge ...

90m for Colombia should be for free over at Seamless, no ?

Gibraltar could be another matter tho.

@Jorge ..

A few times, ive seen stuff at mapmart thats available for free in other places. Couldnt say
exactly *what* it was right now, but I kinda keep a clear memory of the moment when I first noticed that.

For Gibraltar, as i said, its maybe worth having a look ...

Thanks for your help. For what I want to use it for, the 90m data from Seamless is fine.

Thanks again.

I was searching for DEM maps of Israel-Palestine areas.
I'm interested on geographical elevations, also not so close as 90m, but a lot larger.
Is there anything free?
Or have you some advices where to find them with payment?

Thank you in advance.
