Hi,

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but this is the first challenge I'll have the oportunity to participate in, so go easy on me!

When you say "no textures", do you mean no BITMAP textures only, or do you mean no BITMAP and no PROCEDURAL textures.

Thanks for you patience!,

no textures period, so that includes both, keep in mind this is for the final entries. The main focus here is modeling and paying attention to detailing your characters.

helo lildragon,

I just want to ask a question about the classic challange category.

create a caricature of yourself or of any object that defines what you are, your favorite couch, car or sunglasses...as long as it is a caricature

Base on the above line, will one need a picture on the subject that will be caricatured? How else will one know if it is a good caricature or not just some modelling thing taken from a dark closet somewhere a while back.

I think the compatition is kwel but i feel without the picture to compare the model with it will not show how good the caricature is.

on a different note, i kinda like the new challange site.

lil'Dragon.............Is there any new news on the Challenge Type: Architectural Visualization Challenge"

"Currently waiting for Jeff Mottle to provide the link" is all that's up.

Can I enter two of the challenges??? In other words create a character for the "Living toons challenge" and then combine it with the archtectural Visualization Challenge"???

Thanks for any help........

Great! :D

Is it the same rule about bumpmap?
Or can we use bumpmap freely?

The information is now up http://www.cgchallenge.com/challenge_view.php?challenge_id=13

But you have to use Jeff's forum for the WIP thread

and you can enter as many as you want, so long as you think you can finish them ;)

i lildragon,

I was wondering, if we need to post a photograph of the things or person we will be caricature. I thought all caricature is based on how good it is compared to the original live stuff.

If you read the dictionary it says to caricature is to ludicrously exaggerating the peculiarities or defects of persons or things.

so, do we need to post a picture of the said subject and sketch the look of the caricature of the picture and later model it?

Donno if that is clear...

I think I did state, concept art is necessary in the rules ;) if you would like to post a photo also, do so, but a concept sketch is needed

Uh yes, that's correct, they're completely different, different themes, different focus = different challenges :) this and the 2D challenges are the same topic, I need to change the 2D rules a bit, doing so now

So what you're saying, is that it is okay to portrait yourself as your favorite book/movie/game character, or in your favorite book/movie/game?
That opens up an immense world of possibilities... in that case I have 5 in my head allready, just while typing this :)

Quick question: if bump maps are kosher, what about transparency maps? I have a really good excuse, but I don't want to give it away yet ;) Are transparency maps ok for things that are just TOO complicated to model (like, for instance, a piece of crocheted fabric, or a piece of lace or something like that)? I don't want to cheat, after all =)

Thanks,
-Aaron.

I would say yes in this instance, if it's impractical to model something such as this (would like to see someone try :surprised ) then it's fine... But I'm glad you asked because we have to moderate something like this.

Is this Ok? or are you saying that it's ok for our charicature to be playing a game on a console?

If it's Ok for us to make a charicature doing whatever/being whoever, then that would be great.. actually, even if it's not, I just got an idea or two anyway.... :applause:

Does the characature have to look like us? Or can we do an alter-ego type model?

Thanks,

Yes the caricature has to resemble you in some form or fashion

1. Could I create a caricature of somebody I know instead of myself?

2. Can we render with toon shaders?

Wiro
11-07-2002, 12:03 AM
TimothyD: It has to be of yourself but you can use whatever 3D rendering technique you want

The character has to resemble you but if you want to make yourself look like a game character (because you play games, or you're a hero ;) ) then go ahead. Just exaggerate who you are.

And for those that don't do character modelling you can model any object that defines your character, but in a caricature way.
So don't just model a PS2...model a whacky PS2 :D

That's V cool...

So we can incporate elements of a favourite computer game? I was avoiding that because of the "away from the computer" clause that defined activities our toons could be doing.....

This could mean I change direction somewhat...still early enough to do that :D

my 2 cents:
the line between modeling and surfacing is project-based. The same model can look very different based on its stylistic shading / lighting. I wouldn't know how to interpret the 'no textures' rule - surface colors seem to be allowed and based on experience, objects rendered with global illumination techniques receive more enthusiasm.
I for one would like to use clip / transparency maps. I also rely on weight maps to control subdivision sharpness. That is also a border-line case - a vector map, but its effect is on geometry.
(Maybe that's the key - the result effect should be geometry-based. That would mean no colors, though.)

I don't want to launchg a debate on this (i.e. 'what is texture?') I just suggest that everyone do what they have in their heads and let LilDragon and the other moderators pull the red card when something isn't correct.

Well, just think of it as showing off a model, not the paint.
A bumpmap or transparency map affect the structure of the model, not the coloring of it.

An analogy is, you can mix and match the colored clay and use any tools to shape it but don't paint it.

im sorry if this is not clear but if you could define the word that would be helpful

no textures period, so that includes both, keep in mind this is for the final entries. The main focus here is modeling and paying attention to detailing your characters.

I have heard this before:rolleyes: but people still enter their 'fully' textured versions into the finals. Is there a dedicated challenge council that are watching the forums to warn people not to include any textures in the finals, at least a week before the deadline?? (I remember once I almost got disqualified on the last 'Hour' of the contest because someone thought my angel was a beast of burden;) ) And after the warnings, will there be a very quick phase for revue and disqualifications if those warnings were not heeded right before the voting?

Just like to know how the challenge site functions, there seems to be no faq currently available on the challenge site regarding these issues.

Do give us time, and with the challenge site we can regulate entries much easier than before.

Is there a way to remove an entry in the challenge site? I mean, there are some good entries in the 2D challenge that have been finished for some time, and I don't think it's fair that I'm recieving votes on what is technically a disqualified entry (Because I missed the deadline).

Also, my 2D animation entry never got started.
