Okay, here is what I want to do... I have a tv screen, and an image plane behind it. What I want to do is have the image plane render as an alpha channel so that I can composite at a later point in the process. Basicly I want to have the renderer ignore the geometry behind the plane and let me see through the object.
Is this possible, and if so what material would I use for it.

You need to use the Matte/Shadow material.

Not sure if I followed, but I'll give it a shot. Load your file and I'd be glad to check and say for sure.
Either way:

1) Place a place in front of the camera to cover the unwanted pieces of the scene. Make it white or green whatever you like to key it out.
2)Do the masking in post using a layer on top as a 2d image key.

Hope this helps....
