I don't really understand why a save disabled version isn't available via download from Newtek. It's gotta be hurting them when the majority of their competitors do...
Anyway, I think that the procedure is to go to the Newtek site and download the latest version. Without the dongle it should run in "Discovery Edition" mode. There are polygon limits, and I think a watermarked render. Don't know about that for sure, but it's free to try that. Really Newtek... there should be a clear path to a demo.

digging around the ftp i found this. no time to see exactly what it is, sorry. but the 7.x updates are on the ftp as well and can be downloaded as a demo too.

This is actually a Flash file that lists LW (7.5?) features and provides links to online gallery and stuff.

Hopefully one day NewTek will release a demo version, because until this happens, the only way to try the latest version is to buy it - How cool is that? :rolleyes:

Newtek announced that they are releasing a full demo once LW 9 has been released. They are not bothering with a download demo for 8 since LW 9 is going to be quite a leap. I believe if you contact them, they can send you a free demo CD in the post.

I know this is not the same as trying the app, but these demo videos for LightWave 8 will give you some idea of the workflow and how it works:
