ctrl+z = redo,undo,redo,undo (how do i change it to "undo" only?)

I don't know if you can change the undo button like you describe, but you can use ctrl+alt+z to step back through history (essentially multiple undos). Conversely, ctrl+shift+z is step forward through history.

can't you change the shortcuts to do exactly this anyway...i use CTRL + ALT + Z but if you wanted to you could change it to CTRL + z and CTRL + Z for undo and redo.

If memory serves, there's also an option in General Preferences that allows you to change the default behavior of Ctrl-Z (one of the checkboxes).

You can also change the amount of steps you can undo (default 20) in the general options window.

With the risk of repeating some of the above...

In General preferences, if you set 'Redo Key' to CTRL+Shift+Z then you can go back and forth to your heart's content bacause CTRL+Z becomes undo only! Or at least as far as your history states allow! I have this et up on mine pooter and history states set to 100 (also in general preferences)
