View Full Version : Ghost in the Shell - Tank
quadpatch 08-29-2005, 12:29 AM Hi Everyone,
This is my first ever post on any 3D forum so please be gentle =). I have worked in the games industry for almost 5 years as an environment but got made redundant a few months back and so am working on my portfolio a bit. I don't know why I haven't posted before, I have only really got into my own 3D stuff recently because of not having a job =).
Anyway I wanted to make this Tank for ages as I thought it was such a nice design, I loved the original 'Ghost in the Shell' movie for that scene at the end. You don't get to see much of the tank in the film as it's very dark and lots of the shots are close cropped. I get the impression that they made a rough 3D model for the film to trace over it. I say that because a lot of the smaller details on the surface keep changing/disappearing but the model looks so solid when it's moving.
The model I have done so far is based on screen grabs I got from the DVD movie, it took me a long time to properly visualise some of the objects, one of the worst being the head section with the guns. I made one model and had to just start it again when I found another angle of it.
Anyway on with the pictures, I have only modelled so far, I am in the middle of mapping so there is no texture work to speak of but I will try to get there as soon as possible. If anyone has any reference material for this model (blueprints, images of a model kit) I would love to hear from you. I don't think much exists to be honest but some of you may know more than me.

hey quad!
looks great to me, very close to the original concepts all things considered.
i think this might be the same tank that appears near the end of the first book - i'll have a check and see if i can get some of the pictures scanned from it, although i can't promise the film version will be that close to the original : /
for now i found these for you if they're of any use...

looking at the leg armour covers i reckon you could happily lose a lot of the polies there, other than that the modelling looks pretty cleanly done.
keep it up though, it'll look great once the textures are down!

Great model, good adaption from the reference you had. I'm sure time was well spent. Looks good even without the maps, but I'm sure thats going to make it look great. I'm sure seven_spaces links to the images may help out. Good stuff bro. Get those maps going.
Hey man, nice model im looking forward to seeing it textured, i love that tank and had fun modelling it a few years ago, im suprised my old ass page is still up actually.
Theres a book called "The analysis of ghost in the shell" which is full of the designs that appear all through out the movie, which i may say are a thing of beauty. see if you can get your hands on it.

I agree. That's the best damn scene in movie history. Awesome tank. Awesome model. But your render makes it look tiny ;].

Thanks everyone for you're replies. Thanks seven_spaces for the reference images they will come in handy for detailing the textures. Thanks Ash for attaching images of your model, it's very nice and I like some of the detailing you've added. You seem to have used a few more polys than I did. I was originally trying to keep mine to a game spec model (7-10,000) to maybe put it in battlefield or something but that's gone out the window now. I will try and get my hands on the book you mention so thanks for that also.
I know the render makes it look like a lego model =). It's a combination of the surface material, camera angle and depth of field but do not worry I will make a nice scene for it to fix all these problems for the final render.
I will get on with the mapping today, it's a bank holiday but they don't mean much to me at the moment as I'm an out of work bum =Þ.

Great work man, what are the odds that two newbs would both be posting their first post of their work on the forum, and both of them being tanks from Ghost in the Shell. Well all I have to say is to make it look bigger just increase the repeat uv's on the checker pattern so they are small thus making the tank look larger. Other than that very nice modeling.

Thanks James, isn't Ghost in the Shell is great? It's seemed to have inspired all kind of people to make 3D, characters, buildings and robots =). Your early images look good and I can't wait to see more of the model.
My flatmate has made a low poly Tachikoma and he is just finishing off the textures. He also has not posted any of his 3D before so I'm trying to encourgae him to put it on here too.

yeah Ghost in the Shell is an awesome anime. I fell in love with the designs of all of their vehicles and tank variations. I also believe that the tanks are animated extremely well in the show, they bring so much life into each one, the tachikomas are my favorite characters in the anime. I almost cried when they sacraficed themselves to save Batou from the armored mech suit guys. Ahh.... Such a good show.

Here is the Tachikoma model that my flatmate has done (Andrew Watkins), he would have uploaded it himself but his computer is broken at the moment.
The model is just under 6800 polygons and textured with a 2048x2048 map. The texture is not quite finished yet, when it is he will do a proper render and I'll attach it. It was originally intended for a battlefield mod vehicle. The lighting in these models is all texture baked, all views below are from the viewports in Max 7.

Thanks to 'Kid Mesh', 'lookin' and 'tzktime' I appreciate the comments as does Andy (for th Tachikoma). Andy has done some some nice grime on the Tachikoma's texture and I have now fully mapped the Heavy Tank and started texturing but we don't have anything more to show quite yet. It will be soon but I am trying to finish off other parts of my portfolio at the moment.
Thanks again =)
