We did a project like this and tackled it with splines. If you draw a spline then set it's properties to "renderable", you can actually just keep adding points to it and animate them off/on. If you need more help, I'll see if I can find the old tutorial we used...
You want to like simulate a pencil drawing cursive text? or do you mean more like a typewriter/computer?

not really, can you think of an example possibly? the only thing i can think of is the opening of the movie, robin hood:men in tights by mel brooks.
in it they have a flame pass over the screen, and in it's wake is the names of the directors/actors etc....

Well, i havn't seen that movie, but think they have similar effect in The lords of the ring movie.
In the begining of the movie, when Sauron have the ring on his finger, you see the inscription glows or "fade-in" it that effect i'm looking for.

How about animating transparency? That should do.

I did something similar to this a year ago with a company logo (for a mental health institute) so the soft look of the logo being painted on was the perfect touch. To do this I used a free plugin from SnotMonster (Andrew Reid) called "Ghost Trails". It's a simple plugin to use and essentially lofts a spline shape for X many frames based on the motion (transform) of the spline shape you are using as a target. You can find the plugin at http://www.snotmonster.com/

Are you looking for something like this?

(here is a complete 3dsmax5 scene) h**p://lklemenc.150m.com/text-mask.zip
... if so, the trick is in masking those two materials. You must use Blend material, for mask you use this animation from black to white (also done in Max). Check the material settings.
