Why is it that as soon as you think you've got something sussed, you get it wrong?

I have boned up a fish for a job I am on.

My bone chain starts at the tip of the nose and down to the tail.

I thought (wrongly) that if I mapped the head bone to a spline, the bones will slither away but they don't, the whole thing just moves left and right along the spline.

you're right, your bones are going the wrong way really (counter intuitive i know). also even if you do reverse the bones then you're still going to have to animate not just the head bone, but the tail bone too (in fact the tail bone is the one which moves the whole object, then the head bone is the one that "slinks" the fish attach it's goal to the path a little bit before the tail bone). apart from that i'm sure some more experienced character animators will be able to help you with this.

if you're using v8 perhaps the new spline rail deformers might be a better answer?

Have you tried using a deformer? :) .....On Maxons site in the tutes area there is one on making a snake slither, maybe you could adapt it? :)
