I have decide with some free time that I have between terms at school to start on a new model. The model comes from an old sketch I did about 4 or 5 years ago. I would like to upload a better picture but I've got to track down the sketchbook that it's in. In the meantime, here's the creature

I've all ready started the model in Zbrush. It will be rigged and skinned in Maya by time I'm done with it. I've never created anything with zspheres so this will be a learning process. This is my progress so far.

hope this has got you interested.

Its still a little early to crit this. I'll have to keep an eye on the progress though. Good luck with the zbrush modeling. The drawing is pretty darn cool. This should end up looking awesome.

Oh, it's definitely got me interested. I love monsters, and I love ZB, what better combination is there? :D

The model looks good so far, and the drawing looks nice as well. Hoping to see lots of updates soon.

Looks cool so far. I know it's early in the modeling phase, but he's looking a bit lumpy right now. Is that intentional? If it is, then nevermind.

actually I'm thinking about smoothing him out a bit. I think he may have a little too much lump. I think I'm going to concentrate the lumps in certain areas. I'm liking the way the jaw is turning out but I think I may have to tweak it a bit. We'll see. I'll post progress later today.

I've done a few changes to the model. After examination of my reference I noticed that the arms needed to be a bit longer. I extended those. The head does too however I don't mind it this short. Added details to the muscles. I've added a few skin imperfections so far. ... I'm hitting close to 2 million polys now most of which are in the face. I think I may end up close to 2.5 to 3 by time I'm done with this stage. I'll export the file as a normal map as well as a displacement for flexibility with renders. I figure the benifit is I'll be able to use the lowres which I believe is about 20,000 polys or less right now and work with that for the rig. I still haven't decided how I'm going to go about texturing him or what his skin color even looks like. Any suggestions would be appreciated. :D

The next step is the hands and some more skin details.

Show me more SHOW ME MORE! OK OK I'll settle down, just looks so damn good. I can see how you are undecided on the texturing of the model. The wrong texture can make this nice piece of work seem not so nice (if that makes sense.). Hope it turns out great, can;t wait!:bounce:

ok, so I've started on a texture. Not finished obviously but it's starting to look interesting to me at least. So I think I'm headed in the right direction. Let me know what you think.

I'll probably be starting on the michanical parts in maya using nurbs after I've finalized this stage.

I would say add some more greys and greens to get more of a decay look if that's what you are goin for. As for the overall brightness, I think you hit it on the button. What about some beedy eyes to add some sharpness as the contrast and reflection would add some realism to it I think, what you think?

He's looking even better now. Most of the lumpiness is gone, which is nice. Are you going to be giving him more anatomical details? I think that would be really cool, to give him some really ripped arms. But that's just me. :D

Anyway, he's looking fnatastice so far, keep it up.

I agree with you, I have put it aside for a few to get a fresh look at the color and I think it needs more greens and grays to give it more of the decay look. I'm not going for the whole zombie decay look but more of a I've been rolling around in carnage that has been rotting for awhile. Not so much decay but rot.

This creature actually doesn't have eyes at all. I still haven't found that sketchbook so I could scan it for a better reference as well as give everyone a better idea of what I'm going for.

He's got some pretty ripped arms all ready. I figure he's gotta have some pretty harsh upper body strength anyway, being he walks on them. I'll post my progress in an hour or so. I've got some time now to go nuts.

The thing about being ripped is it isn;t really that realistic. It looks cool but if you look at most creatures you'll notice not many of them are actually ripped. Of course there is a certain amount of muscularity especially amongst the animals near the equator, but not reall ripped. some rip in some areas, smoothness in others and definitely add some skinfolds i.e. wrinkles. I saw there are some folds already... is it enough? That's an answer only you can answer!

Very good point. The original picture shows a pretty muscular creature. I normally don't do creatures who have a large muscular structure for that very same reason, however, I'm trying to adapt the model to the original image as much as possible with few variations. It's mostly a test in rigging. When I take the model into maya to enable a fully functional creature I want the ability to really push the muscle movements. I have a specific idea of how this creature moves and I'd like to explore its abilities as they reflect in my mind.

Bad times though. I worked on the texture for two hours last night and for whatever reason I never saved my progress. I Zbrush froze after I performed a rendering action and I lost everything I did last night. I have plenty of time today to work on it. I will remember to save more often. I plan on having images up today. Honest!

Rofl, you silly rabbit. Welcome to the club I do that alot too, hahaha. Save, save, save that's what I do now after every little change it only takes a second. The thing is when you get into your project as most of us do it is easy for the save command to slip your mind, before you know it........... all gone. That's when I go to a gym and hit the punching bag lol!

all right. Here it is. My first renders in Maya with a specular map and a color map. I'm pleased but I think there's a lot that can be done. I'm going to make a displacement map or normal map to smooth the body out in certain parts. The model rendered here is just over 300,000 polygons. I do have a model in zbrush that is about 1.5 million polys that I plan to use as either a displacement map or normal map.

I believe it's coming along quite well. BTW, this time I saved.

How bout a bump map to add some wrinkles especially around the joints but man overall you have a good eye for detail I love those fingernails... kinda creepy actually. Oh Oh, love the color too!

Ok, one last update for the night (time to go clean the kitchen). These are lighting tests with a simple 3 point light set up. I also have a diffuse map and added a tiny bump map to it. I put some more bumps and iregularities on the creature's body in certain parts. I will add more wrinkles in the joints I promise LordHades :D

Enjoy!

I may have to put this off for the CGChallenge. I don't know what I'm going to do for it but I know I want to compete. Delema delema. My brain cogs are turning like crazy. I need something original. I keep thinking of ideas and throwing them away because I've seen them somewhere else before.
