How much physical ram do you have installed?
I would recommend only matching or no more than doubling your virtual settings to your physical ram,(all you do when you have virtual settings is cache to disk anyway, so why bother) as well, it seems to create issues in AFX.
Also what are you rendering? A little description of what you doing is a little more helpful than: rendering, then crash.;)

hmm, i know this problem especially at PC's...
the only hints i can give u are...
1) before render... save... restart... render (Secure Clear Cache^^)
2) Organize the Project as this if large footage is used
small comp (with down-scaled footage) --> comp ---> comp ---> render comp
and not...
large comp (original footage) --> down-scaled comp ---> comp ---> render comp
in my last project this change increased render times and cache amount massively!!!
3) extend ram or prerender all u can ^^

Good points there Angryman:D
Are you using mostly .avi's, solids, or stills?
What are you memory preferences in after effects set at? default I believe is 50%. You can try lowering it to between 35-45% and see if that helps. While your there enable your disk cache so it will free the physical memory.
Your can also manually clean all or some of your caches through the edit>purge> all, undo, image, snapshot, & video memory.
FYI AFX has known issues using more than 2.0 gig of physical ram. Not to mention I'm pretty sure WinXP/Pro only allows 2.0 gig to applications, unless you alter the .ini 2 gig limit switch (which who really knows if it works or not???)
