View Full Version : books for MAX 4
sebek27 11-04-2002, 02:05 PM Hello, I am a beginner to MAX 4 and wanted to know what books you would recommend? Is MAX 4 fundamentals a good book? or MAX 4 Bible better?
thanx

STOP STOP!!!!!
Don't get the MAX4 Bible unless you want a desktop reference of what every button does. It will not teach you much of what you actually want to know. I think the help in file is way better.
I suggest start there.
Then look at mastering the art of production with MAX4 by Jason Busby, it rocks and it will teach you a lot.
Good luck.

Its probably more worth your while to spend $100 on Xerox paper and printer ink and Internet time to wonder the Web for tutorials from real users and not the software creators.
If you do go after a book.... I recommend finding one with case studies of projects under way and one written by a seasoned professional whose written it after work hours.
Go the web option. because you can Alt-Tab the html file too while working with max.

I'd suggest "Inside 3ds max 4" by Kim Lee. Especially if you're a beginner. This book actually walks you through 2 "real" projects, one for games and another for "broadcast." It's a great way to get your feet wet with the app. Once you've gotten comfortable with max, check out "3ds max 4 Magic." Another New Riders book that has some really cool tutorials.
Other than that, I'd suggest getting your hands on max5 ASAP. It's (arguably) a great upgrade from 4.
