View Full Version : Tweak Mode in 3dsMax?
kunal 08-26-2005, 06:53 AM I find the tweak mode available in some applications as a great help for modelling. Basically you can move the vertces instantly in a single step and movee them in screen mode to modify the geometry.
For example, in Silo its activated using Ctrl hotkey, In XSI its using m and Modo also has it. Although you'll get the same movement by switching to screen modein max but then its a long 3step action(even if using the right click menus). I want to stick to max for modelling as its fine to me in. But after trying other application I miss this tweak mode greatly.
Is there any script or any other way(like temporary switching to screen mode by pressing any hotkey) available? Such basic things are more important for improvement than whole bunch of new features I guess:shrug:
Help plz:sad:

you can turn on 'move in screenspace' for the transformtool under
customize --> preferences --> gizmo
it adds a small square handle to the cent of the gizmo.
another way to go is to press alt-rmb to use the quadmenu to quickly switch the coordinates system from local to world to screen etc.

I've got a handy script by Grant Adam that toggles between selected coordinate systems on a hotkey (I put it on O so I wouldn't keep accidentally turning on adaptive degradation).
You can set which coordinate systems you want to cycle through. I think the default is for screen, view and local.

I tried the centre box for screen space but found you can't use the direct drag thing which spoils it. I guess you know that once you've moved something in a certain axis, max remembers the last axis used (x and y in screen space for instance) and you don't need to select then move for the next move, you can drag it directly like tweak. Well this doesn't seem to work quite the same with the centre box gizmo.
You could probably write a script to swap to screenspace whilst a key is held down then revert to the previous coordinate system when it's released, but I don't know of one that already exists.

Thanks a lot to both of you:thumbsup:
Both options are useful. That small box helps in quick jumping to the screen coordinate system but it's a 2 step process as you are required to select the vertex first(or else it might pick any other axis).
The second script worked well for me as I made the screen to view toggle on my spacebar and it helps when fine tweaking while modelling.
We can use both options simultaneously and I'm fine with this. No switching to any other application for now:bounce:
This is driving me nuts! Having to select the element first, then select then the little center box to tweak in screen space. Anyone have any workarounds?

I always use the alt+rmb to swith the coordinate system, it's really fast when you get used to it. ;)
I have hotkeys for switching between the different coordinate systems. My problem is when I am dragging points Max snaps to the last used axis. So instead of just dragging points in screen space. I have to select the points, THEN select the little box. It is seriously stuttering my workflow.

@fez:
If you want to move points in screenspace and you don't need the movement to be constrained to one axis, simply activate both the x and y-axis of the gizmo in screen-mode and then turn it off (x). Now you can freely move around points as soon as you select them. I also have shortcuts for the different coordinate-systems and have checked the "Reference coordinate system =constant" checkbox in the preferences so it doesn't switch if i change from the move- to the rotate-gizmo for example.
Noran,
Thanks a million! Works great. I am really thrilled (sometimes it is the small things)!
