I am trying to generate a normal map for a low polygon model from a high polygon one. I select the high poly one first and then shift+click the low poly one...then I go to the rendering menus Lighting/Shading>Transfer Surface Information. The only result is that the command return box says "Result: file1"...where is "file1?" Also, when I select the Information Option Box for Transfer Surface Information, it tells me "Error: Value is out of range: 0" What am I doing wrong here? I don't get it.

ok...so I figured out where the file is, but it's completely black...shouldn't I be getting an RGB image with colors that at least resemble a normal map?

i really recommend not using the transfer surface information for maya...maya 7 normal tool is sooo much better. its what it should of been originally.
if you can try ATI normal mapper, but you'll need to have version 5 of maya. or if your graphics card supports pixel shaders 2.0 then download meLODy from Nvidia.

i think there is also another plugin that does normal maps too. the one with the torso of the woman, can't remember the rest ;)

oh wait found it

haven't done that, so not sure what it entails. but give it a go.
