I just bought my first DVD burner and was looking to author and burn my own reel. I understand I need a program to burn the DVD with, but also one to auther the DVD?

I'd like to a simple intro menu so you could pop it into a regular set top DVD player and it would give you the play option, or another option such as contact info.

Could someone give me pointers as to what tools are good and affordable for this? I bought the burner as an OEM piece, so it did not come with any software or even cables.

Yeah, Encore is good, only down side is it crashes a lot if you create subtitles directly in the program but once you create the subs on an external app and import, you'll have zero prob.

I used a 30 day trial version of DVD Lab Pro (http://www.mediachance.com/dvdlab/dvdlabpro.html) for creating menus (and authoring) and Nero for burning the actual DVD.
I found DVD Lab really easy to use, lets you import all your own files as buttons/backgrounds, create transitions, etc and as far as I understand it does the whole authoring automatically. Ive burnt my showreel on DVD (with menus n stuff) and it works fine in any dvd player (tv or pc). plus its free for a while :thumbsup:

I work on a Mac system at work, and use Apple's DVD Studio Pro 3. I have been unable to find a PC program that rivals it for ease of use and functionality. Primarily, the importing of photoshop layered files to create normal, rollover and select states for buttons; menus that are not reliant of thumbnail buttons, and the ability to look under the bonnet at the connections made between menu items and tracks.

If anyone knows a good one, speak now! I'll go out and buy for PC at home.

Maybe check out www.doom9.org theres plenty of freeware based dvdr authoring toold there, but for a really higher end kind of soultion i'd surgest encore as mentioned before

yeah I also recommend DVD Encore, easy use to learn but great complexity.
Downside is you pay a lot for it
and it usually works better with photoshop, but not inheritantly

i recommend Ulead 'DVD Workshop2' the interface is very intuitive.

If you just need something basic I highly reccomend TMPGEnc DVD Author. It's inexpensive, and very easy to use. It also has a high degree of compatibility with many players. (In my experience.) Use a seperate burning app (like nero) though if you want to have your DVDs professionally duplicated. http://www.pegasys-inc.com/en/index.html

I also use their MPEG encoder.

In the future I plan to get Vegas +DVD.
