Hey everyone,

A friend of mine is using Maya 6 and has an issue with her polys getting all screwed up when she reopens the file. She's new to Maya, so I'm guessing it's something she's doing, as I've never seen this happen before. She asked me for help, so I'm asking here.

She's trying to model a cartoon character's head. She starts with a cube and cuts faces, merges verts, etc. Her construction history is HUGE. She saved the file. Everything looks fine at this point.

When she opens it again, the head is all screwed up. Some verts are pulled away from the model, some faces seem to be missing. Very weird stuff.

Like I said, I'm at a loss. I'm not really a modeler, and I'm afraid I don't know too much about how Maya's history works. Any ideas?

It could be an issue with screwd up vertecies numeration after some boolean operations....i m not sure 100 % about it but it could be the case....

Maybe export>import in some formats other than MAYA`s *.ma, *.mb can probably help with that

I've seen this problem occur when using mjpolytools or omtoolbox and there has been loads of construction history left on the model.
Maya sometimes seems unable to recreate all the historical changes when you reopen the scene if you've been modelling with these scripts.
It could be to do with the old phantom nodes problem where you get nodes left behind after deleting history (just select and delete in hypergraph).
I think just keeping a weary eye on your construction history was the fix.

Not that this is too helpful now, but experts I know say that it's really important to periodically delete your history because Maya just can't handle saving a lot of it. I'm guessing things like this are the result of keeping too much history in a file. So moving forward, you should advise your friend to delete history every time she gets to a point where she's happy with the progress she's made.

Not that there's an obvious connection here, but when something opens differently than how you last saved it, it's possible you have a keyframe somewhere unexpected (and it's reverting to that when opening).

was there a change in units?

maya sometimes screws up units when importing other units and the CVs have been moved before.

cheers
