Where are you assigning the HDR file?
It should be placed as a texture in the WORLD settings. Then set the mapping to HOR, ANGMAP, and turn on the REAL button.
Then, when you render with Yafray, all should be good.
If you still have an issue, post a blend file so we can have a look see. But make sure you pack the file with the HDR image.

Try Uninstalling Yafray and and then manually delete the the Yafray folder it leaves behind...reboot then install again....I had the same problem and this fixed it for me.
for some reason when you upgrade yafray a file that is supposed to be overwritten is'nt and causes problems...hope this helps. Oh and dont forget to use Yafray 0.0.8a
sorry its Yafray 0.0.8-2
Other people have had the same problem, read...:)

did you try rendering?
you may misunderstand the way this works.
blender cannot use hdri images. yafray can. when you give blender a hdri image, it doesn't know what it is, so it ignores it in its render. when you choose to use yafray render, it passes the image on to yafray, which does know how to use it. You can only use a hdri with yafray.

i know that i use yafray for every render i try, but even with that selected it still says file unknown. is it a problem with yafray? i have 8.2 the one thats optimized for P4 (G7 i think its called) is this the problem?

Would you like to try to post your .blend file so that we can narrow down the problem?
Make sure th HORI buton in the MAP TO tab is pressed as this is an easy step to overlook....I can't tell you how many time I Racked my brains only to find out that the HORI wasnt turned on.

You should, really... It will help people in the future that might make the same mistake! We tried to help you, it's kind of fair to tell us what turned out to be the problem I think :)
Anyway, good to hear it works now! Have fun blending your HDRI!

id tell u but honestly it was soooooooo stupid taht im too embarassed :(
last Q - does GI need to be enabled to use hdr? i cant seem to get it to work with no GI (if its possible)
So you forgot to select Yafray as the renderer in the render options... :D It's OK.
But yes, to utilize the HDR file, you need to turn on either Full or Skydome options for the GI.
As another note, if you do not want the HDRI image to show in your render, turn on PREMUL and RGBA, then use an image format that supports alpha, (i.e. TGA or PNG). It will show in your viewport render, but when you save the image and opne in GIMP or PS, it will not be there.
