Title: Temple At Sunset
Name: Dijacy Abreu Júnior
Country: Brazil
Software: 3ds max
Hi guys! I was trying to make a descent looking sunset scene out of this old one. The light rays were made using volumetric light, and is kinda difficult to setup in this type of outdoor scene.
Thanks For viewing!

Spiffy! Excellent texturing, though it seems like the surface is very smooth and lacking in bumpiness. Of course, the lighting is simply wonderful. Nice work! :D

those are rather nice trees. (I like the image a lot too). Mind explaining a little about the trees?

Did you make the trees in 3D? Did you import the trees from another 3D program? Please explain... there amazing!! I do agree that the surface seems a little smooth... maybe because it is an ancient scene and I expect to see chips and gouges in the stone work, unless this render is takingplace in that time period. But maybe from this far the the texture is fine... I can't decide... I love the lighting!!! The haze coming through the branches... and also the brightness coming over the structure is genius!! 10 stars from me!!!

Nice job overall. Excellent! I think a lay person would look at that and be convinced it's a photograph.
One thing that I think you really nailed was the angle from which the viewer is looking and the feeling of scale.
Keep it up!!!

Looks great, but Im a bit confused. Is the temple a picture or a 3d model?
Hi cgtalkers! Thank you very much for you kind words! I wasn´t expecting a front page out of this scene!
Ok let´s go...this is an old scene, you can find it´s original post in my signature (whispering deep). I decided to make another update of it, adding more vegetation and modifing the temple´s material. The trees were made using a little program called onyx tree, then imported into max using it´s own plugin called tree storm. Inside max I made lots of modifications, including remodeling of some parts. The leaves have a raytrace material with some translucency to somewhat simulate a SSS effect. Note that in the original ilumination (see images below) they have green leaves and still have the same material. This translucency made them yellowinsh because of the new light. The volumetric light was a pain to setup.

And the wires:

EDIT: There´s no postwork, these renders were straight out of max.
EDIT2: Changed the image´s hosting. The other one exceeded the mothly transfer.
Again, thank you all for your comments!!

The model is great! Overall it looks very nice!
Textures are very cool. I don't like only one thing on the first (sunset) image. It is amount of yellow in the upper right corner. There is too much yellow light to be as much as real.
Great work!

Your rendering of the Victory Gate isn't quite realistic. I would like to know what image of the gate you are basing your rendering on, because the faces of the statues do not look at all like you've portrayed. To see the actual images of the Victory Gate at Angkor Wa, Cambodia, please go to these links:

http://www.peaceofangkorweb.com/Angkor/0211-410-angkor-thom-s-gate.jpg
As you can see the faces all have typically 'Africoid' features and not the 'Mongoloid' characteristics you've portrayed.

I didn´t try to recreate Angkor Wat (or Angkor Thom, which is the entrace to the temple of Siva) I made this scene without any reference and just tryied to get the same feeling of ruins, grandeur and lost places/civilization found in the city of angkor. To recreate angkor is one of my future projects though.
EDIT: Anyway, Angkor Wat is just one temple, the one dedicated to Vishnu, The city of Angkor is full of these, it´ll take a while to recreate all.
See ya.

It is important, as an artist, that when you attempt to recreate something that does exist, you represent it as accurately as you can. To do otherwise is to create simply pure fantasy. My post was intended for those who have never seen the real images of the temples and sculptures of Angkor Wat (such as one of the posters who was asking if the structures existed), who might be misled by your misrepresentation of the real thing. Now, they should be able to see that the place really exists and, just as important, see how it actually looks like.
If you want reference images for your more realistic Angkor Wat render, just type 'angkor' in google's image search engine and you'll get all the photos you need. This applies to everyone out there who wants to see how the place looks like.
It .... To do otherwise is to create simply pure fantasy.
That´s exactly what I tryied to do, pure fantasy. Instead of recreating the thing, I just wanted to make something based on it. If you take a look at the other renders, you´ll realize there´s no river passing through one of these gates in Angkor, so recreating wasn´t my intention from the start. If every artist recreate everything/anything, where´s the creativity?

The trees were made using a little program called onyxtree and they´re actual 3d geometry. See the first page, the last post is mine and there´s two wireframe views.
Thanks for your kind comments!!:)

He didn't say it was the victory gate did he?
How would anyone be Misled if he didn't say it was that?
Your post seems a bit arrogant.

Yeah, but nobody said anything about a reallistic representation, right? And I REALLY think you should review your conceptions about art... it really seems you're missing the point. (..."it is important, as an artist, that when you attempt to recreate something that does exist, you represent it as accurately as you can." - come on dude! Do you really believe that? So to you art is limited simply to photography?? What about abstraction, creativity, style? Have you ever seen a Picasso?). Your post seems really arrogant and in my opinion doesn't really add anything here.

soooo its perfecttttt
Hmm, nice nice work man. I really like it. The only issue I see with this, which no one else seems to have pointed out, is that the pillars at the bottom of the picture seem a bit too rounded and a little bit too cgish but that's just a minor quibble.
Good work :-)

Hi guys!!!
dhanish: Thanks!! But´s I wasn´t expecting even a front page....
SoCool: The image took 30 min to render. The High resolution version (3600 pixels wide)
took about 4 hours.
Mastahful: The scene has 8 million polys. But there are some displacements in certain
objects like the tree trunks.
Jameson_BR: Valeu James!! Sua opinião é muito importante!! Das pessoas que conheço,
você é quem é o verdadeiro artista.
Thanks James!! Your opinion is very important to me!! Among the guys I
know you´re the real artist.
Mirandinha: Ahh faltou a palavra!! I couldn´t find a word!
Thanks again!!

No way man, this image, literally, rocks the house down.
I like the Buddha subject matter as well - apparently in some Buddhist teachings it's considered "wrong" to make poor quality statues or images of the Buddha, as it would amuse or distract people from concentration and right-mind.
I don't think you are in any danger of that, in fact, the shaft of light is very "enlightening".
See you're a Dune fan as well - good show!
