Is there a way you can acheive something similar to photoshop, and flatten the layers (in the timeline) to save mem and space.

also, is there a way of just pre-rendering one layer?

Pre-compose a large number of layers, read all about pre-composing compositions the afx help.:) It's a great way to keep large comps more managable.

You can also you shy layers to hide certain layers from the timeline.
