Hey there.

Just a quick question for a beginner in Maya. I've come from a max background and have been using there subdiv emulation system to model for some time. (Making 2 cubes one smooth one a control mesh)

In Maya, you have real subdiv. The thing is that I've come across a small problem that I would like answered if possible.

When you create a fresh subdiv cube, then switch to polygon edit mode, you have a extra vertex in the center of each face of the original cube.

Now I can't seam to get rid of this vertex with out the subdiv switching to a simulated subdiv... any ideas?

Here is a pic of the SUBdiv with a highlight around the unwanted Vertexs (http://members.ozemail.com.au/~martian/tmp/unwanted_vertex.jpg)

One more thing I would like to ask, is how to set up the connection editor so you can have a mirrored SUBdiv respond in real-time to edits to the original SUBdiv?

use the connectPolyShape script for modeling and then switch to SubD after... that way you can easily switch between smooth/unsmooth.

Okay, were do I get this script.. and I would prefer to figure out how to do it with pure subdivs. As if you start with a poly and then convert you have a diffrent topolagy than you normaly would have.... don't u?

Topology stays exactly the same on convert, just makes it into a SubDiv object.

Don't know why that extra vertex is there, guess it's what maya makes by default. Either live with it, or create a poly cube and convert to SubDiv.

connectPolyShape (CPS) is available on www.Highend3d.com in the MEL/Polygons section. It's OK and lots of people use it, personally I prefer just to model normally then apply a smooth and undo again when I've seen what it looks like.

If you want to have a mirrored subD match the original, just Edit>Duplicate options, scale it by -1 in your mirror axis and check "Instance". Then you will have a copy that will look exactly like your original object, just don't forget to delete history on the instance before you join the two. Happy modelling!

Tanks I checked out that script, it is just a batch system.

You don't have "instance" options for the subDIV mirror, only use of the axis xyz. Nothing else.

Anyway to mirror subDIV objects and use the connection editor to bind 'em?

I ended up, just using a instanced duplicate of the subdiv, for reference, then when finished modelling the first 1/2 I deleted it and then used the proper subdiv mirror option. Any better procedures then let me know.

Sorry, maybe didn't explain properly, that's what I meant! Perhaps it's not as ideal as working mirrored on one complete mesh, but hey, it works.

Actually thinking about it, I do remember seeing a script that let you mirror vertex edits on a mesh. I think it was for polygons but it shouldn't be too hard to re-write for sub-d's. Again, try highend
