A bit of everything: Quick sketch in Acrylic, paint in OpenCanvas, composition in GIMP
Total time 90 minutes.

Vitriolic - nice work! I didn't actually see the ninja the first time I looked, I suppose that means I am one dead pirate.
kaylon - good colors on the wood, the texturing and palette gives a nice sense of age and weathing. The ninja are suitably menacing as well.

augustus what's that Acrylic beta 2? any good? link?
Microsoft Acrylic Beta is the codename for a product that Microsoft is developing -- actually, they purchased Creature House Expression, in theory to incorporate the vector technology into the next version of Windows. It is a bit like a vector version of Corel Painter. Very nice vector art program. Recently they have added the ability to have bitmap layers in addition to vector layers, but I haven't played with it much.
A beta version is available that expires in December. Apparently, Microsoft doesn't know if or when they will be making this a purchaseable product. In the meantime, the demo can be found here.

Grab it and try it out. Quite fun!

Hehe - this was a great topic. It's bad that I hadn't got more time. It got a bit rough.
I did the sketching in Acrylic, in around 20 minutes. Then I painted it in Painter. Ca 30 minutes for that so in the whole 50 minutes... yeah - the pledge 6/7.

"When a savage war begins,
Neither is the side that wins."
A symbolic approach to the subject... the battle is over, and this is all that remains.
Pencil on typing paper, colored in Photoshop using mouse. First attempt at a digital painting for the Daily Sketch Group.
Drawing: ~30 minutes
Photoshop: ~90 minutes
Total: ~2 hours
I'd hoped to get this one up in time for some solid C&C for a change, but got caught up in the Photoshop painting. I'm happy with some parts, not so much so with others... considering it was done using a mouse, I guess it's not bad for a first attempt...

"nice work everybody!"... :argh:
comon! you - the masters of brushes, the geniuses of art! for example - kaylon, rawwad, Art2, pipichu, anil6tr, augustus, 11th door and others! where are your advices and critics?! i thought that this forum made not only to paint and post pictures - but also - to ipmrove your own and your friends (co-forumers) art-skills! :deal:
so i'd like to please all of you - be so kind to help others - who just trying to improve their skills, and making first steps on that hard way of painting-art! don't use such words like "nice work everybody!" - it has no point at all! no sence and help! :banghead:
if you can see that others are making mistakes which can be repaired with some tutorials or words - PLEASE!!! - spend a couple of minutes - to mention about it! :lightbulb
looking for understanding,
your co-forumer Butch Makora
ButchMakora, you're right.
Most of the time I have no time or have to go to bed.
But I really love going through all the sketches. It always makes my day.
I'll try my best in the future or else you can always drop me a pm with short specific questions. Maybe I can help.
Also you could point out with you sketch on what specific area you want comment on.
So people know what to comment on.
"the masters of brushes, the geniuses of art" ... nah! Not me mate. But masters do occasionally visit this place and drop a sketch. Cool eh?

Hardly consider myself anywhere near a master not even close :) hehehe.... one reason why I dont crit others often is I feel I have no right to till I myself feel happier about my own art... I generally dislike most of the stuff I do..I don't like the style that I have developed and want to do more "painterly" stuff, but when i try it's really really bad hehe.
If you feel it would help more I will try to make an effort to assist in the crits...not that my humble thoughts count for much :)...

Kaylon you are wrong :D
in two ways. first, your art is great. it really is and more than 45% of the visitors in this forum envy you very much. you can trust me, i am one of the many ;)
second:
it does not mattr if you consider yourself a great artist or not. here are many different people with many different backgrounds, in art, education and so on. but everybody here invests time into their hobby called "art" or painting or sketching... you surf through the web, study tutorials, try this try that. and you learn something by that. many others didnt do the tuts you did, or had a decent teacher in school.
what i wanna say: many people know things others dont. so dont be to shy to share knowledge. you may think your not good enough to use your knowledge on your own art, but that shouldnt keep you from letting other in on your secrets. when you see something wrong and you know or just even feel what he/she could do better, than tell it :D
thank you :)

He he, thanks. But you know, I've just closed my eyes and hit the tablet randomly. Sometimes works. When didn't, I just say it represents the chaos in my soul. :D
Art2-> Someone called Marlon Kromodikoro came here and said he's not a master. Sorry mate, but that's a lie. :)
hehe thanks art2 ;)
@augustus: hitting the tablet at random? thats quite an idea...gonna try that in painter and see what happens...perhaps with oil colors...the can flow quite nicely i guess...gotta try :)

I like what Tuzz said. I feel the same way as some others-- like I'm in no position to criticize. I'm serious, there are some real masters here; you know who you are!
But I'm just here to have fun. Even if it's just whipping up some ridiculous scene that might actually be way off-topic, DSG is something for me to fill up my free time. And if I have no free time, I create some anyway. :D
And at the same time, I want to get better any way I can. Maybe we should all throw in a comment for someone who asks for criticism, then none of us feel like we've torn them apart. I dunno.
Yar! A riot of a topic, says I!

Art2, kaylon, augustus, tuzz, Hexaditidom... everybody! thanks for the answers! hope my words and ideas will have a good realization in future ;)
for now i just can say - that a really good idea is to post not only your pictures and words about using softwear and time spent... i think each one who is waiting for advices and critics should post it.
maybe we can post not words (to be short)... maybe a kind of SIGN or SMILES? it's a question to a forum leader...
anyway - doesn't matter which way will be realization - main idea is - that if somebody will ask about critics or advices - we should help him - without shyness or other emotions. we all are the MASTERS! we all are the students! everything relative to everything! so let's imrove the world :buttrock:
