you can set how far down the chain soft ik goes. you can switch soft ik on and off in animation as well as animate goal influence (also animate any of the parameters in the soft ik tags or the ik tags) so that should do it. though i'm not really a character animator, but certainly i don't see why that wouldn't be possible.

I think when we get some docs on Xpresso this sort of thing will be fairly easy to do. For the time being you could do the IK/FK rig thingy where you make 3 sets of your rig one strictly FK, one strictly IK and then the third one will be the on that actually deforms the mesh. You can then interpolate between the 2 positions of the FK and IK rigs and then set up sliders that chnage the interpolation method.
A lot of work I know. but some people actually work that way. You can also do what that other guy was talking about andjust us SoftIk and type in the influences and animate them over time to get the same effect.
Just a couple ideas.
Who knows when Xpresso comes out with documentation maybe somebody could set up a few radio buttons in an interface and some sliders to make this sort of thing more accesible to the user.
Hopefully some day soon.
