anyone have any insight as to why max files seem much larger than they need to be? or scripts/utilities to "clean" extraneous data (like unused materials) for max v5,6,7?

any time I zip a maxfile it compresses down to about 1/8th the file size

just now using windows compressed folders I got my folder from 15 gig to 2.8 gig
these are mostly max 5 and 6 files with bipeds in them

I know when I was at EA there were issues with files with bipeds in them being absurdly large... the TDs didn't know whatto make of it other than swear a lot.

Yes, I know that in Max 6 anyways, if I merge something in sometimes the file gets bloated and grows to large sizes.

The work around to this, which I got from someone a while ago works well.

1. Go to File Xref Objects, click close
2. Go to File Xref Scenes, click close
2. Type in gc() in the maxscript command line
4. Save as a new file or overwrite

Compare your file sizes it should drop dramatically.

It's an irritating problem that I hope has been fixed in versions 7 & 8.

Hope that helps you.
