View Full Version : Glass and Caustics
AlexC 08-24-2005, 02:43 PM Hey,
I've been working on this Glass today, I think it turned out ok for a begginner. One thing I don't like is the size of the Caustics, they seem a bit big and just...not right.
I'm going to try and make the ground brushed metal instead of wood, but not too sure on how to make brushed metal, any ideas how? (noise map stretched in one direction, frensel reflect? )
Here it is, rendered in Vray. Texturing took a while because I had never done Glass or Liquid before, lighting took a while to get right, but I can't seem to get rid of the shadow on the right without spoling the Caustics.
UPDATE V4

Hi Alex[RM-UK]!
i don't use 3ds max or vray, so mine are only general advice.. but try to do the glass reflective using fresnel effect (using gradients, may be...) applying an HDRI image on it (some people will contest me for this...:D )
about caustics, try to keep down the intensity and the accuracy (but not very very much)...
for the ground you should paint a texture yourself. i don't know what is your idea about brushed metal, but for the color you could use only grey. use photoshop or a similar program for paint a bump map. use an option like "add noise" and then the filter "motion blur".
use reflection and fresnel effect on this surface!
hope this could help you...

Hey alberto86,
Thanks for the comments. About the Caustics, I'm not sure how to turn the intensity down, thats why I said they seem 'big and not right' in Vray. I shall have a go now.
For the ground do you just mean a colour, no material as such?
EDIT: Woops, all ways good when you press Submit before you have finished ^^
I found how to adjust the Caustics intensity, Will upload new picture soon. I've also tried adding a frensel reflection to the glass aswell.

Does your glass material have the options "Double-sided" and "Reflect on back side" enabled? To get realistic glass, this is a must. You can find those option in the material editor under the options menu. Here's a glass render I did a few weeks back. Caustics come from GI.

Ah thank you Tom. I'm using Vray's Material, and I just found the options for 2 Sides, and Reflect on back side. Double sided was already turned on, but Reflect on back side wasn't. I have just put that on now and am rendering it on 'low' to see what it's like. Will upload soon.

Ok here it is, I havn't changed the ground material yet but I will do. Is it an improvment?

WOW that looks real, i think that you should stop working on the glass and work on the background.

Thank you,
Yeh I think I may just do that, I had an idea of making a park bench with grass underneath it. So you will see the grass below the table, not sure what to put in the backrgound of that though, any ideas?

You are almost there with the realism of the glass. The only thing I would add would be the imperfections. The imperfections differentiate the general 3d models from the realistic looking work. I would recommend either scanning some black and white finger prints and tweaking them to make a bump map. That and some water stains on the glass. I would suggest taking a glass from your pantry and filling it with water so you can see all of those wonderful imperfections.

Hum, Nice idea about the finger prints, I'm going to do that. With watermarks, I was going to do that but I didn't know how to create them. Would it just be a ring around the Glass, in a slightly lighter colour of the drink?
Do you have any ideas for the environment around it?

I don't really see much difference now that you've changed the material settings. Do you have Fresnel reflections on? And what kind of lighting do you use? It looks like a single spotlight. I suggest you use Vray lights combined with Vray's skylight option (Turn on Override MAX's in the "VRAY:: Environment" menu). I know it's difficult, but keep trying different settings and save the results for comparison. Eventually you'll get it right.

Update, added finger print

Tom -> I am using a single Spotlight for the lighting. I shall play around with the lighting now and see what I can come up with.
Thanks,

I would recommend taking a glass and dunking it in liquid and then setting it on a surface. Be sure to shake it off first. That will show you what a water ring should look like. You can also drip some non-permanent calligraphy ink. Dripping it on the bottom of the glass and then putting the glass on a sheet of paper will give you an acurate texture to scan for the table. I would recommend putting the paper on a non-porous surface and then clean it up with water right away. Otherwise the ink may stain the surface if you let it sit.

I would recommend using 3 point lighting to give your glass depth.

oh, wow.
I like the caustics and the material of the gals!
the grund of the glas is black? i think it comes from a black enviorment, or something. not so pritty, isn't it?
the lightning is not very interesing, maybe a different color for diffuse (daylight) and for the spot a red color like a lamp. maya has a nice funktion to set the light temperatur. but so it slightly.
i hope i wrote everything quite ok. english...
the reflections, caustics are great!

Thank you, I know what you mean about the lighting it is quite boring. I can't think of anything to do for the background/environment - if you have any ideas i'd glady try my best at them.
With the bottom of the glass beeing black, if you fill a clear glass up with a dark liquid (in my case a dark red) the bottom of the glass will apear black.
I am using Max, so I can't use the colour temperature thing you talked about.
Once I finish my room I'm making, I will continue on with this glass.
