View Full Version : geforce 6600 to leadtek NVIDIA Quadro FX 540
mooncry 08-24-2005, 08:12 AM hi guys, im planning to upgrade my graphic card ral soon, and i would like to ask you, from your experience, how many times faster should i expect, i came from geforce 6600 to quadro fx 540, in terms of maya/c4d viewport, modelling and rendering? thanks!:)
my current specs is amd athlon 64 3000+ ( amd athlon x2 hope fully by next year)
2 gig ram, geforce 6600(soon to be Quadro Fx 540), mother board is NVIDIA nForce™4 MCP.

Don't quote me as I don't use either of the apps mentioned but from reading around I don't think you'll see any improvement in performance by switching to the Quadro FX540 from a Geforce 6600. Personally I'd save that cash for the dual core athlon you're after. :)

thanks for the advice jbw, il gonna take note of that, but 1 question though, why does maya preffered the quadro families?
I believe Maya has a hardware renderer which makes use of the quadro family of cards. The Quadro 540 can use this hardware renderer to:
Quickly generate images for pre-visualization and broadcast quality final output. With interactive high quality hardware rendering, you’ll see representations of your work in the scene views as you build and modify them. Hardware plug-in shaders, including cgFX, are supported and you can visualize color per vertex or per pixel effects.
Hardware rendering generates high-quality images significantly faster using the power of next-generation graphics cards and can be used from the Maya user interface or the command line.
I don't use Maya so I don't know how useful this hardware renderer is but for sheer viewport performance I don't think you'll see an improvement.
The quadro might make your system more stable in Maya but that's always up for debate and if you don't suffer from constant crashes in your 3d apps I stand by my original advice.
Another option might be to softmod your current geforce to a quadro though I haven't done this since the geforce 2 days so don't really know what's involved and I don't know if Maya will see it as a quadro and allow you to use the hardware renderer either. Do a serch in this forum on soft modding and you'll find loads of info.
Alternatively if you're just looking for increasing viewport performance then the new 7xxx line of geforces might be worth a look?

hi,
i would keep ur money if oyur not having to much trouble with original graphic s card as the lower end quadro fx cards arnt really that good anyway.
frinds of mine have upgraded to fx 2000 recently from mid level ati cards and they havnt seen much difference. I myself have just upgraded from a gaming card to a quadro 980xgl wich i got of ebay for about 70£ which was a bargin, but alot of the fx range are over priced for what they are. id also save for the new processors u want that will help u more.
hope that helps!
hi,
I also have an 6600 (the Asus one :)) but the problem is that i can't mod it to quadro . The problemo is that my card is the A4 revision wich isn't moddable... so, take a look in riva tunner to see what revision u own ;). BTW i heard only the A2 and below are moddable...
as for the performance, in maya you'll a nice boost (that's what i heard... your question has been asked many times in this forum imo ) and more stability compared to the geforce one. And also, softmoded cards unlock quadro capabilities such antialiased viewport bla bla

Can you post the link to where you got your information? I'm looking to modding a Geforce 6600 GT, but I can't find a link.
i've read that on a romanian hardware forum but here's also a thread from guru3d:

it says clearly that only the 6600 non A4 are moddale to quadro :(
