View Full Version : Help! Can't "make movie".
bsullivan 08-24-2005, 03:04 AM Hello all.
I'm racking my brain here, and I don't know what I'm doing wrong. In my composition I have a 16 second movie clip (with sound), followed by a 16 second sound clip and about 15 still images. All in all, it's about 55 seconds long. When I go to "make movie", it gets through the first 16 second movie clip, then this message pops up:
After Effects: not enough memory to create (null).
(2097152K requested, 311790K available)
(53 :: 15)
What the heck am I supposed to do here? I already tried upping the virtual memory in the paging file to try and compensate, but the same message came up. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Have you tried shutting restarting your system and then run AE only without any other programs being launched before? Other than that there could be a millionb reasons. However, I normally get this type of error if one of the source footage files is damaged. AE can then not properly calculate the RAM it neds for one frame.

Check that your source still images are in RGB color, instead of CMYK.

You need to figure out which piece of footage is causing the hang. Try rendering just the movie clip, then just the second audio, then the stills.
When you find the culprit you'll have to re-save some of the footage. If it the stills - I would re-save the still images as a different format (pict, psd, jpeg, tiff) making sure they are RGB and a reasonable size.
If it's the clip - re-export as a different codec. (animation codec is usually used)
or resave audio as different codec.

If you're lucky you'll find the troublesome footage by clicking through items in the Project window. When AE refreshes the thumbnail-image, it may pop-up the same error message. Then go and fix that file in Photoshop or otherwise.
Not sure will it for for video footage, thought...

Thanks for the advice, everyone.
After trying a couple of your suggestions, I actually ended up doing something completely different. Go figure.
I realized that since AE wasn't rendering anything past the end of my video clip, I could separate the video from everything else and just render it individually. So I cut out everthing after the video clip and hit "Make movie". The error message still popped up, but it did render the whole video. Lo and behold, I now had a Quicktime of just my video portion--the first half of my composition. So then I made a second comp with everything but the video portion still intact. I just imported my freshly-rendered Quicktime where it belonged, hit "Make movie" again, and Voila! The whole composition came out perfect.
The most effecient way to fix it? Probably not, but it worked. Funny how the easiest answer can sometimes take the longest to get to. Although, I guess technically the easiest answer would've been to heave my computer out the window. Glad I didn't have to resort to that. Hope this helps anybody in a similar predicament!
