Hi all,
Here (http://www.orionflame.com/media/GDC%202007.avi) is a video I have made for GDC 2007, showcasing Orionflame 4. The original model is by the incredibly talented artist Dominic Qwek.
I will release the next version very soon. The only missing thing is the documentation.
Enjoy,
Light

A big thanks goes to Jeff Hanna for showcasing Orionflame 4 in his Tech Art show! From what I have heard it was amazing. I wish I was there.
Thanks loocas. I tried downloading it now, and I was able to get 600k. Seems to be related to distance. :)
Thanks,
Light

Seems to be related to distance. :)
Most likely :)
Btw: I've watched it and there are some pretty cool features, also, the interface is loveable! :)
Would you put a list of all features here for us, please?

I have done lots of changes on v3's features like removing, combining, replacing, etc. Now not only it's more compact, but also more powerful and provide a better foundation for future updates and features. Most of the power lies in the options for these tools. Not all tools have options, but the ones that have are very flexible, accomodating a variety of similar modeling needs. You only need to change them when you need them.
As you can see the interface is not cluttered in v4. This is one of the key concepts I used when writing Orionflame 4.
Thanks,
Light

I really like Your paint selection tool. But it was in Orionflame 3 too. There are something new in this tool in version 4 ?

Thanks Tim007. :)
The only difference is that now you don't need to adjust a value for selecting edges, which was determining the maximum distance from the center of edges before they are selected. Now it calculates the right value based on the current zooming ratio along with some other values.

Quite a bunch of folks emailed me about the lack of a screenshot for the video, as it's a big file to download, especially for people who are on 56k or living very far from the States.

Any news lately on v4?

Hi, I am trying the demo of Orionflame 3 and when I have the main popup window open and I click on any of the tools it puts a message in the upper portion of the viewport that says "You have to be logged in as an administrator." How do I log into 3dsmax as an administrator? I am logged into windows xp as an administrator so this is confusing me.

Sorry for the late reply.
Paul, I think it's an installer error. But one way to fix it is to evaluate this line in the listener:
SetINISetting (GetMaxINIFile()) "Light" "Admin" "true"
This is a check to make sure ini files can be writable so I can save tool settings.
As for the news on v4, there is a very high possibility for it to be released next week. I wrote the docs, and it's only the videos that needs to be recorded. After that I plan to add some very useful tools on it regularly.
Thanks,
Light

So does Orionflame not work in Max 9? I think that's what my problem is.
Light
05-17-2007, 06:12 PM
Orionflame 3 doesn't support max 9, due to some changes to the underlying paths, etc. But v4 is a brand new tool that supports max 6-9.
Btw I fixed the link.
Thanks again,

Hi all,
Finally Orionflame 4 (http://www.orionflame.com) has been officially released! Sorry for the late release, but I wanted this version to provide a really solid base for the following updates. That way I will be able to focus on the features, instead of worrying about core issues.
For documentation, I went with the chm approach, with very brief descriptions, and before-after images for every step.
The software uses the same license system, so you don't need to reauthorize. All registered users will be sent a free Max 9 license for each license they own, but since the number is quite high, it might take a while until I get back to you.
Feedback is welcome as always.
Thanks,
Light

Thanks alot guys for your kind words. :)
Icons by the talented artist Christoph Westphal. He did a great job.
So far from what I heard from the artists using Orionflame, version 4 does not exist outside the workflow, but instead it blends into it.

Hi Light, I think you know how long I have been looking forward to this release, and I must say it looks AWESOME! but I have a small install problem
when I try to run the script it says
MAXScript FileIn Exception
--Type error : Call needs function or class, got : undefined
then it goes on to say after I press ok.
--Unknown property : "Icons" in #Struct:OrionFlame(
pointCenter:<fn>,
explode2Elements:<fn>,
averageVerts:<fn>
etc
etc
etc
)
I wonder if this is a common error that is simple to fix or whether it merrits a max9 reinstall, (although I have tried it with max 8 and 9 with same results)
Thanks for any help you can give Light.

Yeah I received this error from a number of users. My guess is an existing installation of Orionflame 3/4 confuses things. I will be sure to fix this today.
Thanks again for your help.

Thanks alot Andrew. :) I am getting very positive feedback from other artists too.
Yesterday I have improved the setup which uninstalls Orionflame 2 and 3 automatically, before installing anything, and that fixes the problem described above.
The other addition is:
Improved even out algorithm for Coons and Loft Surfaces (Topology > Surface).

Hi Light
Maybe this is of but, I thinks this is a important question for me, I use polyBoost in my modeling workflow and I with the comments of all here I wonder if is necessary or if orionflame bring new tools that polyboost have not. ?
Perhaps it is not a etic question but is a necessary question ?
thanks

I remember Neil Blevins at Pixar wrote that he loved both Polyboost and Orionflame. They definetly cover different areas even if there are some overlaps.

True.
As for uninstalling, simply remove Orionflame 4 folder from stdplugs/stdscripts, and Orionflame.mcr from ui/macroscripts.

Just trying out orionfalme v4 - fantastic - but one problem - when i click slide i get --type error: Call needs function or class, got:undefined.
I'm running max 9 64 bit on vista 64 if that's any help - also soft slide works :) get that puppy fixed and you've got another happy customer!

Hi,
Thanks alot for your words.
As for Slide, I have tested it and it worked fine, both from LPanel, and the macro, and the secondary function using both.
Did you have the latest one? I updated it on 12.09.2007.
See if this solves your problem, if not, maybe you can send me a video/image of the problem.
Thanks again,

Hi,
By utilities, did you mean the Orionflame panel? If so, you need to have an Editable Poly object selected for them to work. Also be sure to be in the right subobject level. IE polygon tools don't work if you are not in polygon subobject level.
As for uninstalling, you can remove these files yourself:
1. Orionflame 4 folder from <Max folder>\stdplugs\stdscripts
2. Orionflame.mcr from <Max folder>\ui\macroscripts
3. Orionflame 4 Icons from <Max folder>\ui
Cheers,
Light
