Hi all,

I have to create a flyby that uses very high res textures (10Kx5K) but when I try and import a texture this size maya says the file is too big. Does anyone know how to solve this?

AFAIK thats more like a warning then an error and if you have enough RAM then it will load and render properly. Not sure, but think the warning comes when maya tries to render a swatch of the file in hypershade or the attribute editor etc. I just tried a 10k x 10k file and it loaded up with warnings after 15-20 sec. Even rendered properly in MR but would hang the system for some time if i ever opened a view where the file was being displayed

One quick fix would be to use a lo rezl 'stand-in' file while you are working with the scene and switch the file when you do the final batch render (from outside Maya of course)

I called Alias, support, they told me the set limit was 8196 square. How much RAM do you have in your machine? My workstation has 1.5 gigs, guess that's not enough. thanks for the info.

Well the file was only 300MB so i dont know how RAM could be an issue (i have 2GB, not much more then yours) If alias themselves say the limit is 8k then i guess we really shouldnt be messing with textures larger then that. Seems a silly thing to put a hard limit on it though.

Id make sure you use power of 2 texture resolutions, I seem to remember reading that if a texture is say 200x200 pixels it uses as much memory as one that is 256x256. In your case one that is 10,000x5,000 will use as much as 16384 x 8192! This is only something I've read a while ago so I can't guarantee its accurate but it's definitely worth bearing in mind ;).
