matte paintings are used lots in films. it saves money on sets. a bit of the set is filmed then the rest is painted in to complete the illusion. example of a famous matte painting in the return of the jedi, jabbas palace was a painting.

That is beautiful!!!
What is the process you go through and what program do you use to work on something like this... Photoshop? Painter? Both?

I am very impressed with your painting and find the work inspirational.

thanks, but I still don't understand ...you paint the environment by hand with Photoshop?

look at the origonal plate of the walls showing the castle. that is the picture i began with. then using photoshop i recreated the rest of the castle and the mountains and the rocks it is sat on using photshop by basically adding to the origonal plate. all this then camera mapped onto rough geometry in 3d so you can push the camera into the scene achieving a 3d effect.

Very nice. I have a ton of admiration towards matte paintings. I have a question, though. For the sunset version, do you do a complete overpainting, or is a lot of it envolve just tweaking colors? Also, what would the resolution of this image be, and how many layers do you usually end up with? Thanks, and nice work!

the daylight one was done first with most of the elements seperated . for example each mountain range is on its own layer. this is the same for the castle to allow for the camera mapping.
the sunset scene is a re- coloring of the daylight one but with a different sky. they are about 2000 pixels wide to allow for quite a big push in at pal resolution.

Very nice pictures, I would actually love to see a higher resolution of any of them, because the JPG compression is actually making the pic very blurry, can't see much of the details you probably put in it.

Wow, any chance we could get a tutorial, even a basic one showing how you did this?

Amazing lovely work, the compositing is great. No complaints.

How much painting did you do? I mean, is everything except the castle painted? I ask, because I know some matte painters paint nearly the entire image, while others do an amazing job compositing and blending real life images into their paintings. They did that for a lot of the skies in Lord of the Rings.

sorry i didnt reply , but i am hoping that these paintings have landed me some freelance work. and i have been following that up.

most of the image is photo manipulation and i have only painted where neccessary, the sunset version is about 50% painted as that was the only way to get it feeling it was one picture. I was asked to do these to show my photoshop compositing skills as at an interview i had i had shown that i could paint.

a friend of mine at weta indicated that alot of the matte painting done now is photo manipulation based upon on set photgraphy and using models. i think the attitude is why spend a week painting a tree when you might as well scan one in and get the same result.

thanks for all your nice comments about the images

 Breathtaking! That is a truly amazing matte painting. I've always wanted to try painting a digital matte but have had no clue on where to start. You should really consider writing a tutorial. Hopefully we can see more mattes to come.
