So I was working on a model and figured out how to get the kinds of looks I want with the fast SSS skin material with Mental Ray in Max 7. And I proceeded to change parameters to create the different kinds of SubSurface Scattering effects that I wanted on different parts of my model, then I tried to use the Max Blend material to put both of those materials where I wanted on the model with a black and white mask. I rendered it, and had the right colors and the bump maps were in place but it was so dark that there was obviously no SSS effect at all.
Well I don't expect perfect compatability between MR and Max materials and elements but this does blow a hole in my usual way of working. I have to work in a method consistent with Mental Ray to get Mental Ray effects like true SSS.
Well I don't see a Mental Ray blend or composite material. I tried using the material to shader component and putting it in the lightmap component of a Mental Ray material, and dragging the SSS material into the material to shader component. It let me do that but it rendered without the SSS effect.

I'm coming to the conclusion that Mental Ray wants me to make all of my variations within the SSS material, probably with maps. That wouldn't be a problem except that in setting up the two variant SSS materials and getting them the way I liked them I changed values as well as colors, are maps going to allow enough control?

I guess I'm just looking for comments and suggestions rather than help with a specific problem. But tell me if I've guessed right or wrong about any of the things I've mentioned.

try the "8 mix" or "20 mix" nodes. these are essentailly the same as photoshop layers.

this problem is already solved, use Shellac Material with lighmap of course
sorry, if I have not understood question

I have the same problem, I find that the fast SSS effect only work on the base level of material, so if I put fast SSS material into blend or composite or shellac or top/bottom or even Muti/sub material, the SSS effect will gone. And put the fast SSS shader into mental ray material is no effect ether. I think this is a bug in the connection between max and mental ray.

So you need to complete your work in a single material.
