Anyone rigid bind their characters?
if so, Do you have a flow to counter the sometime "awful" deformations?

I've found that if you go into Skin -> Edit Ridgid Skin -> Create Flexor it can create some really really nice defomations similar to smooth weighting. I've only done it on simple poly and nurbs objects though... so not sure how it will go on any heavy meshes.

Hope it helps.

In the past I have had undesirable results from flexors while rendering. I'm not sure if that problem is fixed but I still prefer rigid binding. I like to use a lattice deformer and rigid bind the lattace points rather than the surface verticies. Its similar to flexors but much more dependable in my opion. It can also simplify the work load if your surface is dense and lattice is not.
