View Full Version : render region crashing XSI
freddie 08-22-2005, 06:43 PM I have a MAJOR problem :(
When I use render region, XSI crash, not everytime but almost.
I have an almost new computer(see signature), bought it this spring.
On my old comp it never crashes, windows crashes instead, but that isa because the motherboard got fried by lightning :/
Can it be that I only have a nVidia 6800GT and not a quadro?(as I have in my old comp, Q4XGL900)
But then my brother should have the same problem, since he use a ATI 9800pro and he have never had any crashes, maybe one or two but thats okay, but not 5-6 in a day.
Can it be the drivers?
I use 77.30 from the BF2 dvd.
Or maybe some other hardware, like the memory or processor?
Freddie
EDIT: I have SP2 on the other comp, maybe its mor estabile by that?
PS.
The processor is gonna get changed anyway around christmas to a Athlon 64 X2 :) .DS
Yeah I know my grammar sucks in this post :scream:

Turn off auto update and manually update render region. See if that helps.

Forgot to say that its when I draw the out the render region window it crashes.
But I will test it :)
Thanks
Freddie
I'll be back...maybe ;)
I suspect it's got something to do with your drivers... my own experience: with the oldest possible drivers coming with XP (I got an old Matrox GFX card) render region works like a charm... with the brand new drivers it gets painfully slow.
EDIT: 'course it's just a clue, the two problems here sound pretty different...

For your comparison, I am using a similar system like yours - A64 3400+/Abit AV8/1 GB RAM/nVidia 6600GT 128MB DDR3 - and I have no problem with render region of any sort. I am using Win XP Pro SP2 and nVidia ForceWare 77.72.
same problem here with my 6800GT... i have testet many different driver... nothing helps...

Darn.
So XSI like every card except 6800GT
But so far it seems that it works with auto refresh off

I HAVE THE SAME CRASHES ON ONE OF THE COMPUTERS I'M USING.....THE CARD IS A NVIDIA FX5200.....it doesn't crash every time, but i'd better save my scene before "regioning".....what i do to avoid thoses crashes is to "warming up" ;) the rendering by rendering a tiny empty area, and then render the reel region.... but no drivers could help.

hmm I bought nVidia because of what I have read about XSI and ATI cards donīt mix to good.
I will try with the warmup thing :)
But sofar it works with the auto update turned off :)

GAAAAAAAAAAH :scream::argh::cry: It wasnīt auto refresh :banghead:
Well I gonna reinstall XP anyway so I may try SP2 :argh:
Donīt like SP2, canīt play LAN games with SP2, I donīt know why

CRAP!
I reinstalled winXP and installed SP2, and it still crashes, so it seems that XSI donīt like nVidia 6800GT when Oglu had the same problem with his 6800GT.
Or its just my comp that hates me(see my thread in the hardware forum (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=271295))
So it is to save more often and not use render region as often :)

No I donīt have a maintenance contract...I need that for that kind of question, right?
Only have Foundation.

I had the same problem with a driver older than 77.72, on a fx5700.
Forceware 77.72 fixed it for me.

77.72 isnīt that the driver that screwed up the color in moviefiles?
Maybe it was the one before that ? I tested some 77.XX and it drew me crazy:twisted:
But Iīm gonna test 77.77 and see what happens then :) maybe it is that simple hehe

there's a simple fix for that:
in the color correction settings > Apply color changes to: All (instead of Desktop)
and save the settings

I had to do that every time I was gonna watch a .AVI file
Maybe just my comp that is senile
But I gonna try 77.77
Thanks for the tip :)

Well if you "Save as" in that page and then save a new profile, it should remember the settings. But anyway maybe 77.77 works for you.

I will start of by saying that I am running Win2K with a radeon 9100 and had that problem all the time untill I upgraded to a quadro video card but before I upgraded I found that If I disabled my video card (before launching XSI) controle pannel > display > settings > advanced > troubleshooting the problm would go away. sorry I don't know were the XP equivilant is located.
hope this helps,
Donovan
